Latest Dylan Larkin update drastically hurts the Golden Knights' chances

This potential proposal kills two birds with one stone for the Golden Knights regarding their pursuit.

I think it's safe to say that the Vegas Golden Knights are less likely to get Dylan Larkin from the Detroit Red Wings by the day—at least on paper. While the rumor mill has been filled with wild stories, the latest one doesn't bode too well for Vegas's chances of acquiring the Olympic gold medalist.

On the Fourth Period, it was recently discussed how the Dallas Stars were looking to acquire Larkin's services. After all, the Michigan native recently added Dallas as one of his preferred destinations. The Stars are willing to up the ante to get the superstar to come to Texas.

"The Stars are believed to be willing to move restricted free agent sniper Jason Robertson to Detroit for Dylan Larkin."
Fourth Period

That's right, dear reader. Jason Robertson is in the mix. Yes, Red Wings general manager Steve Yzerman initially said no to a potential trade. However, there's always the possibility that he comes around on this offer, even if he seems like he doesn't know what he's doing.

After all, the Red Wings get younger and can add one of the best goal scorers in the modern NHL landscape. Robertson's only 26 years old and has shown that he can carry the load, even if that comes with a hefty price tag. Besides, Detroit is desperate for a playoff appearance. What's not to say that they'll do something drastic to make the Stanley Cup playoffs for the first time since 2016?

It's high time that the Golden Knights fans put the Larkin talks to rest—for now

Look, anything can change and knowing Kelly McCrimmon, he's bound to pull a rabbit out of a magic hat. And yes, some pundits aren't going to rest on their laurels because of this. But the Golden Knights seem to already have their 2026-27 roster set in place.

The Golden Knights still won't have much wiggle room to work in salary cap-wise, even when Alex Pietrangelo is put on season-ending LTIR. They won't even sniff the $1 million mark once that happens, leaving them with little to no room to operate.

Even with the possibility of trading players like Tomas Hertl or Adin Hill, Yzerman won't budge. The Red Wings general manager has made his intentions clear with the Larkin trade. He wants a plug-and-play superstar who can immediately help Detroit get back to the playoffs. Just look at what happened with Matt Boldy when the Red Wings and the Wild were negotiating.

Again, anything can happen at a moment's notice. Did anybody expect Pavel Dorofeyev to go to the New York Rangers? No. But the price tag was simply too much for McCrimmon to bear, especially since the Russian winger didn't do what Jack Eichel or Mitch Marner could do.

But the circumstances are setting up to be a trade that should be shelved for later. The Golden Knights simply don't have the assets to make a Larkin deal work yet. Therefore, it's best to wait and see what comes around, potentially at the trade deadline.
