Plenty of Vegas Golden Knights fans were clamoring for Kelly McCrimmon to acquire Dylan Larkin. The Detroit Red Wings center would provide a two-way game to the Golden Knights, adding more dimensions to the team. Think of the power play getting better as an example, putting them on another level...
...At least, that's the hope and dream. Unfortunately, reality doesn't cater to our every demand, making things much tougher to deal with. David Pagnotta provided us with such an example on Friday, talking on NHL Tonight about Larkin's potential next destination.
"A lot of people are pointing to Minnesota; I certainly looks like Wild are definitely keen to try to make that happen."David Pagnotta on NHL Tonight
The Minnesota Wild are one of the teams linked to the Olympic gold medalist, joining the Golden Knights, the Florida Panthers, and the Dallas Stars. There's also the realistic possibility that he sticks around with Detroit. Red Wings general manager Steve Yzerman made "no guarantees" regarding a Larkin trade request, further dampening the possibility of Jack Eichel's Olympic buddy joining him.
To make matters even worse, the Wild are dead set on acquiring Larkin. They had one of the best rosters in franchise history, only to fall short to the Colorado Avalanche. Getting the Red Wings center will bolster Minnesota and leave the Golden Knights high and dry.
Is it worth making a trade now for Larkin? Well, here's the thing. Golden Knights fans saw firsthand what happens when you trade a player during the summer. You get two first-round draft picks and more picks later, equaling an overpay.
Generally, McCrimmon isn't one to make a massive overpay for players. Sure, there might be moments like acquiring Rasmus Andersson that happen. But in-season trades are the way to go for the general manager, especially with the prices going down.
