Ladies and gentlemen, the 2026 Vegas Golden Knights Rookie Faceoff is happening this weekend. Finally, we're getting some hockey back, even if it means that more than half of the announced roster doesn't make the NHL. Still, hockey is hockey and we don't discriminate around here.
It might sound like it's lower-level content and might seem like it's straight out of high school. Still, hockey is hockey and hardcore hockey fans will take whatever they can get. With Opening Knight just over three weeks away, it's good to get the appetizers in before we go into entrees.
Speaking of the Rookie Faceoff in San Jose, there are plenty of spry chickens waiting to have their moment in the NHL. While the odds might be long for plenty of young prospects, that doesn't mean they shouldn't give up. In fact, they can boost their stock with an incredible showing this weekend.
So, let's celebrate hockey returning (to a degree) by looking at which three prospects can stand out the most. Three names come to mind regarding their NHL futures, so they must get a head start on theirs. After all, Trevor Connelly can't be the only one who has a bright future.
Bronson Ride
Ride is projected to land on the Henderson Silver Knights roster for the upcoming season. The defenseman provides plenty of size, standing at 6'7" and weighing in at 212 lbs. That alone should give Silver Knights fans confidence if he makes the roster.
But that's not all he provides. Ride is also good at moving the puck and setting up scoring opportunities. Last season, he had 17 assists with the OHL's North Bay Battalion and served as the team's Assistant Captain. Therefore, the expectation for him is simple: Get ready for the upcoming season and iron out some deficiencies.
The good news? He also brings a sturdy defensive game, making him a reliable back-end player. If he relies on his size during the Rookie Camp and the Rookie Faceoff, he'll move one step closer to achieving his NHL dreams.
Mathieu Cataford
Once upon a time, Cataford had all the potential in the world to become a prominent young Golden Knights forward. He was the QMJHL MVP for the 2023-24 season, scoring 40 goals and 50 assists with the Halifax Mooseheads.
But his Henderson Silver Knights tenure and he hasn't lived up to expectations. Last season, he scored three goals and 10 assists in 59 games with the Silver Knights. Those numbers aren't getting you to the NHL level, especially when you're expected to do something with said expectations.
If he can stand out at the Rookie Faceoff, he'll buy himself some time with the Golden Knights. It could be the next step in getting himself on the right track, which should help him in his NHL journey.
Trent Swick
Last season was a terrific introduction for Trent Swick in the minor leagues. He scored 25 goals and 25 assists with the Tahoe Knight Monsters, giving the East Coast Hockey League club plenty of offense. But now the question remains: Can he go to the next level?
He's projected to compete for a spot on the Silver Knights' roster as well. Like Ride, he also carries plenty of size, standing at 6'6" and weighing 207 lbs. That could add even size to the AHL club and make them imposing.
Therefore, the next objective should be to have a strong Rookie Faceoff. That means burying a few goals and showing that he can carry his game to the next level. He has playmaking abilities and knows how to create space, especially on the inside.
