Just when you thought the NHL rumor mill was taking a break, out comes Connor Hellebuyck with the latest bombshell. He knows that general managers like the Vegas Golden Knights' own Kelly McCrimmon are licking their chops at potentially acquiring the gold medal-winning goaltender's services. That's what makes Thursday's announcement much more interesting.
The Winnipeg Jets goaltender released a statement on Thursday, stating his intentions to be traded out of Winnipeg. While he's been looking for a new home for months now, he reiterated his request on social media.

Last season wasn't the most sterling campaign for the Hart Trophy winner. He posted a GAA of 2.86 and a save percentage of .895, far from his MVP season in 2024-25 (GAA of 2.01, a save percentage of .925, and eight shutouts). Still, Hellebuyck's trade request has perked up the ears of hockey general managers everywhere.
That should include McCrimmon, who saw his goaltending tandem fall apart like a wet taco in 2025-26. The Golden Knights had the 28th-best team save percentage, posting a statline of .884. The best goaltender in this regard was Akira Schmid, who had a save percentage of .893.
And yes, expect the Golden Knights to be involved (or talked about, at least) in the Hellebuyck rumors in some capacity. Is there a viable path for Connor Hellebuyck to come to the Vegas Golden Knights?
The sticking point in the negotiations is none other than salary cap space. Currently, the Golden Knights are over roughly $8.6 million in the salary cap department. The expectation is that Alex Pietrangelo will get the season-ending LTIR designation, making them cap-compliant. Still, the problem is that there's litle wiggle room for Vegas to operate here.
That would mean parting ways with a couple of players. The first name that comes to mind is Adin Hill, who has a cap hit of $6.25 million. But... he's coming off a terrible 2025-26 campaign wrought with bad play and injuries, making him less desirable. Moreover, an additional player is needed to offset Hellebuyck's $8.5 million cap hit.
Now, the Golden Knights could throw in Nic Dowd or Brett Howden if they desired. But is it worth ditching the latter if he had an excellent postseason the year prior? Maybe Dowd can be part of the deal. But it remains to be seen if Winnipeg is willing to entertain both Hill and Dowd in the same breath. Maybe Hertl? Is it worth giving up your main power play driver, though?
The good news? The Golden Knights have plenty of high draft capital to make this work. They have three first-round draft picks in the next three drafts, giving them plenty of ammo to work with. The bad news? Hellebuyck is 33 years old, making this a rougher move to do.
Still, the mere thought of kicking the tires on a Hellebuyck trade should excite Golden Knights fans. The goaltending has been one of the team's major concerns in the past season, with fans searching for answers. Getting the Olympic gold medalist could invoke memories of a certain Flower within the Realm.
