Pavel Dorofeyev was just seven goals away from tying Jonathan Marchessault's all-time power play goals record. After breaking the single-season records for the most power play goals, he was destined to nab the next target. That was until he was traded to the New York Rangers.
That's one less competitor for the Original Misfit's record, leaving him to worry a little bit less. It shows that longevity also plays a role in keeping a record intact, as long as it's paired with consistency. At least, he'll hold onto it for a little bit longer.
Yes, this is similar to the trip down memory lane for the most all-time points. Once again, the Conn Smythe winner will lose this record in the upcoming season due to some consistent performers. Such a cruel fate to suddenly be replaced when many fans have deemed you as "Mr. Golden Knight."

Who could eventually break Jonathan Marchessault's all-time power play goals record?
Last time, we talked about Jack Eichel (22 power play goals) being on pace for the most all-time points in Golden Knights history. He's posted back-to-back seasons of 90 or more points, putting him firmly in the driver's seat for years to come. While that sounds nice from a hockey perspective, power play goals won't be a factor into how he reaches that point.
The past two seasons have seen the superstar score six combined power play goals. While he's known to crack double digits in this category (he's done it three times in his career), he's also scored more than seven power play goals in a season only five times. Thus, fans shouldn't expect Eichel to compete for the record unless he starts producing consistently.
One name that can break Marchessault's record this season is Mark Stone. The Captain sits five goals back of the Misfit's record and scored a career-high nine power play goals last season. While he is on the last year of his current deal, he's beloved in Las Vegas and fans would hate to see him go. If he stays? The record's all his.

However, that pales in comparison to Tomas Hertl, who currently sits at 28 power play goals. The Czech Olympian scored 14 goals in 2024-25 and 13 in 2025-26. If he doesn't tie or break the record this season, he can do it in the next season if he has another consistenly strong season.
The record is also trending towards being Hertl's because of the players in front of him. Pavel Dorofeyev and Reilly Smith are gone and William Karlsson is aging. While Hertl's also up there in age (32 years old), the former San Jose Shark has had his best man advantage outing in the past two seasons.
With the Russian winger out of the picture, it's Hertl's record to lose. His current contract expires in 2030, giving him ample time to abuse the bumper. While he's prone to slow down due to the undefeated nature of Father Time, everyone's favorite turtle appears destined to overtake the beloved Misfit on power play goals.
