Do you want to know what the best birthday gift is? Aside from watching your favorite NFL team win on Thursday, it's seeing hockey return to the public eye. The Vegas Golden Knights will participate in the upcoming 2026 Rookie Faceoff in San Jose. They're joined by teams such as the Anaheim Ducks, the Colorado Avalanche, the Los Angeles Kings, the San Jose Sharks, and the Utah Mammoth.
Ladies and gentlemen, it might not seem like much. In fact, it might appear to be high school hockey on the screen. But hockey is back in essence. But it comes with a twist!
You see, you're seeing the stars of tomorrow take the ice and play for their NHL futures. That ranges from first-round draft picks to those who were drafted too late. Think of names drafted in the sixth round of the NHL Draft. Heck, even throw in the undrafted players, like Braeden Bowman!
With that comes the wants and the needs. Everyone has them because many of us want more out of life. Let's do a Rookie Faceoff version of this and see what the biggest needs for the Golden Knights are, shall we?
1.) Strong goaltender performances
The Golden Knights' farm system will hinge on how well the netminders do in the upcoming year. They've gotten solid performances from goalies like Carl Lindbom, leading their respective teams to the playoffs. That will be no different for the Rookie Faceoff this season, when the Golden Knights will trot out more youngsters to fill these spots.
The onus is on Pavel Moysevich and crew to build on that momentum for the upcoming Rookie Faceoff. Allowing three or more goals in a game won't necessarily spell disaster. But it will serve as a precautionary tale as to what could be problematic during the regular season.
2.) Trevor Connelly continues to dominate the lower levels
Scoring 14 goals and 35 assists last season with the Henderson Silver Knights was a great start for the former first-round pick. He showed that he could hang around at a faster pace, using his playmaking skills to his advantage. Plus, he bulked up!
The Golden Knights need him to continue that momentum into the 2026 Rookie Faceoff. Scoring a goal in San Jose would be wonderful for the native of Tustin, California. But it'd be even better if he could get two to continue his upward momentum within the Golden Knights' farm system.
3.) More development from the defensemen
Kelly McCrimmon made it a priority to bolster the defensemen group in this season's NHL Draft. Picking up names like Sean Burick and Juho Piiparinen will help the group grow in the future. But let's focus on Burick for a second.
The gargantuan defenseman joins fellow giant, Bronson Ride, on the blue line for the Rookie Faceoff. The unit will have unprecedented size that will give Vegas a solid advantage. They must grow into their roles and become stalwarts within the group. That way, players like Piiparinen can have some help.
