Remember when Ville Heinola was called up in light of Parker Wotherspoon being put on a week-to-week basis with an upper-body injury? Mind you, this happened earlier in the week and the Vegas Golden Knights were trying to figure out their roster depth.
Then, he got sent down to the Henderson Silver Knights. Then, the Vegas Golden Knights recalled him from the Silver Knights. It literally became the Simpsons meme where Abe Simpson walks into an establishment, does a circle, and leaves said establishment. Cue the clip.
If it means adding depth and replacing Wotherspoon on the blue line with Dylan Coghlan, then go for it. The Golden Knights are banged up right now, having lost Victor Olofsson in the fracas along the way.
Still, Heinola comes in as a depth piece on a blue line that's gelling together at the right time. The Golden Knights currently sit at 7-2-0 and have the most points in the NHL entering Friday's competition. As for the Finnish defenseman, he's been productive for the Silver Knights this season.
Heinola has a goal and three assists in four games this season, adding offense to a team missing key pieces like Braeden Bowman and Trevor Connelly (because, you know, they were called up to take roster spots on the Golden Knights). Who else but a puck-moving defenseman to ease the pain of not having key producers around? Furthermore, he could do that for the Golden Knights if he gets the opportunity.
Watch for Ville Heinola in the upcoming weeks, whether it's with the Vegas Golden Knights or the Henderson Silver Knights
Where Ville Heinola goes next, nobody knows. He could be back with the Silver Knights for the weekend, only to be called up by the Golden Knights again. It reminds me a bit of the whole Raphael Lavoie situation, where the Golden Knights played hot potato with the Edmonton Oilers for the player's services. The only difference? They're playing it with their little brother.
Still, you can't deny that the Finnish defenseman brings plenty to the table for the Golden Knights. He's got an incredible hockey IQ and can read opposing defenses without any issues. He's also terrific in situational play, making him a tough out for any opponent. Such expertise makes him an underrated depth piece for a Golden Knights team that has historically had little of it.
Plus, the Golden Knights have done excellent work in rehabbing former first-round picks like Heinola. Brett Howden is a shining example. He broke out during the 2024-25 season and had a stellar Stanley Cup playoff campaign last season. You can also point to Marc-Andre Fleury as another example as he rose to the occasion after being discarded by the Pittsburgh Penguins for Matt Murray. Even Tanner Pearson impacted the team in a positive way!
I know that the Finnish defenseman won't have much ice time in the 2026-27 season for the Golden Knights. But if he continues to play a poised style under pressure, there's no denying that he'll become a viable piece in any platform.
