Nobody would've guessed that Brett Howden was a playoff performer until this season. The Vegas Golden Knights forward scored 14 goals this postseason, topping the entire NHL. In fact, that goal total was enough to propel him to the fifth-most points during the postseason (18). Of course, he brought memorable performances that made this total happen.
For example, he almost led the Golden Knights to a Game 2 victory over the Carolina Hurricanes (if his team didn't let him down) and scored a goal and an assist in the prior game. But his most memorable performance came before that, when he stole Game 4 from the Utah Mammoth. Two goals and an assist led the way as the Golden Knights eventually vanquished the Mammoth and its motley crew of clubbers.
But the playoff performance wasn't just apparent this past season. It also rose to prominence in 2023, when Howden scored five goals and five assists in 22 games. That included two goals and two assists in the Stanley Cup Final, which helped the Golden Knights vanquish the Florida Panthers.
This season will see a greater emphasis of shooting in such clutch situations. The Golden Knights will be missing some key forwards, whether that's via free agency or by being traded by Kelly McCrimmon. Therefore, Howden carries the greater responsibility of being as clutch as ever.
Why Brett Howden will matter in the upcoming season for the Vegas Golden Knights
With names like Pavel Dorofeyev and Keegan Kolesar out of the picture, that leaves the Golden Knights to rely on younger players. That comes with inexperience, which can be problematic for a team currently in a contention window. How will these players handle the pressure when the lights are bright?
Well, look no further because Howden is the perfect guy for the job. He's scored three overtime playoff goals during his NHL career, incluidng a Game 5 double-overtime winner against the Mammoth. Mind you, that was a shorthanded goal, which makes him even more potent.
But it's also being put with Mitch Marner that makes him deadly. Both can utilize their speed and puck-handling abilities to go on the rush, whether that's on even strength or on the penalty kill. If they play on the second line, watch out.
The Vegas Golden Knights have an absolute gem in the former first-round draft pick. He has shown his innate ability in performing when called upon, making him reliable in tight situations. Don't be surprised if the Golden Knights faithful see more from Howden in 2026-27.
