Vegas Golden Knights fans were curious about the most recent call-up, Ville Heinola. They were wondering why a defenseman would be called up in place of winger Victor Olofsson. Mind you, Olofsson was placed on LTIR on Sunday with an undisclosed injury.
Furthermore, the Golden Knights already had Dylan Coghlan called up as a backup. There's certainly no way that another defenseman would be called up to back the starting blue liners up. Plus, they're healthy, too! What's the point of doing this if you have a group at 100% health?

Well, it doesn't hurt to have a little protection (I know where your mind's going with that joke, so stop it haha). What happens when you lose a defenseman to a crazy hit (think Oliver Ekman-Larsson) or a freak injury? That's something that could put the Golden Knights in a compromised position.
Plus, Heinola has a good resume. The defenseman already has a goal with the Henderson Silver Knights this season. Yes, he's played three games. But the Finnish prospect is already making moves and is impressing the masses with his excellent play.
Is there more to the move than simply adding more depth to the lineup? Or could the Golden Knights make a simple lineup change that could help them on the current road trip? More importantly, what can Heinola bring to Vegas? Let's explore this move further and see what it means for Heinola and the Golden Knights post-Olofsson.
What to make of Ville Heinola being called up by the Vegas Golden Knights
The call-up is rather interesting because the Vegas Golden Knights don't necessarily need another defenseman right now. They already have their six guys locked into the mix and could've used an additional forward. Still, having an insurance policy doesn't hurt, especially with Heinola on board.
He's an offensively sound player who makes smart decisions with the puck. He has terrific on-ice vision and can set up the necessary scoring opportunity. Heinola is also poised under pressure, handling big-league chances without any struggle. That's great news for the Golden Knights if they lose a defenseman in the future.
His recent campaign with the AHL's Manitoba Moose is a perfect example. He scored three goals and 18 assists in 44 games last season with the Moose, marking an excellent run in the minor leagues. There is no doubt that the Finnish defenseman can contribute in a smaller role with Vegas.
Who knows? Vegas might stick with an 11-7 format for a while. They might utilize him as an offensive driver and lean heavily on his offensive IQ and acumen. Imagine Heinola setting up transition scoring opportunities and getting a goal or two from the aftermath. Will it happen, though? Probably not. Probably.
That would bode well for the Golden Knights in certain spots. But it'll be a wait-and-see approach to see what happens in the upcoming games. After all, the Toronto Maple Leafs took massive hits to their defenseman group and are seeing the aftermath.
