It's safe to say that acquiring the superstar center from the Buffalo Sabres was the best decision that the Golden Knights ever made. When Vegas needed a game-changing center to elevate the team, general manager Kelly McCrimmon wasted little time acquiring the Olympic gold medalist.
If you know the backstory, it goes a little something like this. Eichel needed neck surgery and struggled with the Buffalo Sabres, similar to how the Bills struggle with Patrick Mahomes during the playoffs. He wanted artificial cervical disc replacement surgery, but the Sabres wouldn't budge. That's when he requested a change of scenery.
The Golden Knights came calling. They acquired the disgruntled center and got a third-round pick in the process. Out went Alex Tuch, Peyton Krebs, a protected 2022 first-round pick, and a conditional 2023 second-round pick. Everyone went home happy... well, only the Golden Knights did.
Sabres fans felt jaded by the situation. They watched their former franchise face make them look bad, with every goal and assist adding to the embarrassment. To make matters worse, they watched their former hockey prodigy hoist Lord Stanley over his head. Meanwhile, Sabre fans were stuck with missing the playoffs until the 2025-26 season. The rest is history, as they say.
Why Jack Eichel matters to the Vegas Golden Knights beyond a statistical standpoint
You can point to the various achievements that the Olympic gold medalist pulled off during his Vegas residency. Aside from scoring the most single-season points, he also had the most single-season assists in 2024-25 (66). He's also the only Golden Knights player with 90 or more points in back-to-back seasons. But it isn't just statistics that matter for Vegas.
It's also the need for a game-changing center that made Eichel perfect. Vegas was struggling against teams like the Montreal Canadiens and the Dallas Stars because they didn't have such a player at their disposal. They needed someone to drive plays and dictate the pace, similar to superstars like Sidney Crosby and Connor McDavid.
That's where the former Sabres star came into play. He was excellent at reading opposing defenses, finding the perfect spot to attack. As a result, he developed into the franchise face that Vegas desperately needed. But it wasn't just the regular season that he thrived. It was also the postseason that he excelled.
He scored six goals and 20 assists during the 2023 Stanley Cup run, putting him within inches of winning the Conn Smythe Trophy. If Jonathan Marchessault hadn't had a strong Stanley Cup playoff session in 2023, the trophy would likely have been Eichel's.
