What 702 means to me as a Vegas Golden Knights fan

Yesterday was 702 day for Las Vegas residents. What does being a Las Vegas native mean to me?

Yesterday was 702 Day, which honors Las Vegas as a city. Sin City has a prestigious history, ranging from the casinos to the nightlife. That even includes the growing sports scene, which is pushing to have all four major leagues under the same lights.

Of course, that started with the Vegas Golden Knights, who have captivated Las Vegas since "Day F*****g One." Making three Stanley Cup Final appearances, winning a Stanley Cup, and making the playoffs will certainly get a city rallying around you.

I moved here from Michigan because I felt disconnected from Metro Detroit. It felt like a gatekeeper community, where not many people felt opening. On top of that, my high school experience was... less than friendly. Lo and behold, Las Vegas has giving me greater meaning in my life, starting with the Golden Knights.

What 702 means to me as a Vegas Golden Knights fan

I've mentioned the story about me coming back from my Las Vegas trip after the terrible mass shooting happened numerous times. It was an event that put my own life into perspective, along with the meaning of community. Some people might scoff at the mere idea of helping your community through any means. But what do they know about getting in touch with the vulnerable?

Such heartless people haven't felt the pain of losing a loved one in such a tragic event. They don't understand the magnitude of having someone in your life suddenly disappear without any control. That's why two words matter to me more than anything: Vegas Strong.

Those two words mean resilience and hope for a better tomorrow. That's especially true when your hockey team steps up and picks up the slack. Want a Stanley Cup Final and a Pacific Division title to go with a Stanley Cup win six years later? You got it.

In that same vein, 702 means thinking about others. We're all in this together. We're dealing with the same daily problems and we could all use a little relief. Why not help one another today and give back? It's free and it's all we can do.

I hope you take some time to understand what 702 means to you. For me, it means being selfless and understanding others while giving them a helping hand. Some people might not understand that meaning. But they probably don't understand the significance of 702 like the Golden Knights do.
