Let me tell you a little story about my high school days in Romeo, Michigan, dear reader. It comes at a perfect time after the Vegas Golden Knights swept the Colorado Avalanche to win the Western Conference. It involves a classmate who was the prettiest girl at the time.
She was a terrific dancer who even made the Dallas Cowboys Cheerleading squad in 2010. That's a big achievement coming out of graduating high school the year before. Suddenly, you're living the high life while a guy like me had nothing going on (mainly because the Golden Knights didn't even exist).
Now, I'm not dunking on the Cowboys in any sense. They actually have something that teams like the San Jose Sharks and the Seattle Kraken dare dream of: titles and a legacy. They have a history that should be respected. But for this one particular classmate, she was chasing glory and attention, just like her fellow classmates striving to be Pistons dancers, singers, and models.
Lo and behold, the Cowboys go 6-10 in the only season she cheers for them and doesn't return the next year.
Never heard from again. Just forgotten in the annals of Cowboys history.
Fast forward 12 years, and her classmate (me) starts covering the Vegas Golden Knights. Granted, he's only doing this for a smaller publication. But he follows the team through its trials and tribulations before writing about them. We're talking about the tragic mass shooting that shook Las Vegas on October 1, 2017. We're also talking about disheartening events such as the "Major That Should've Been A Minor" and Fleury's misplayed puck.
Tuesday's win was yet another payoff for the Golden Knights—and why the sports world should pay attention
Yes, the Golden Knights have had heartbreaking moments before. Hard to believe for a franchise that's only missed the playoffs once. But those tragic events paid off massively in Year Six, i.e., the year that Bill Foley promised.
Not only that, but the Golden Knights made it to the Stanley Cup Final again, disposing of the Colorado Avalanche in a resounding sweep. That's three times in the first nine seasons for the Golden Knights, which is unprecedented for any team built from the ground up.
Yet, the Golden Knights don't get as much fanfare as they should from the sports world. They should because going on a generational run for a team introduced to a league without going through a previous league should be acknowledge. Still, being a hockey team isn't as sexy as an NFL team. Oh well.
Still, thousands of Golden Knights fans were cheering on their team and losing their voices over hockey. They stuck around, gave each other high-fives, and brought the brooms out for a big win. All of this happened in a windy storm and the sun scorching hot.
People like my classmate (especially with the Gen Z Instagram models and TikTokers now in her former position) will strive for attention in a world where winners are absolute and above everything else. Just look at teams like the Los Angeles Dodgers and the Kansas City Chiefs and how they've won. Let's go above that and be the winners by bringing home the Stanley Cup, Golden Knights fans. Who knows? Maybe the peeps in Romeo will ditch the NFL for hockey.
