Boy, a change of scenery can do a lot for a former Toronto Maple Leaf, eh? Mitch Marner is certainly a prime example of this with three goals and two assists in his last two playoff games. Suddenly, people are echoing Mark Stone's sentiments about the alleged rumors of Marner not being a "clutch" player.
"I guess that's a Toronto thing."
Indeed, Captain, that must be the case. But Stone isn't the only player saying that right now. Auston Matthews isn't so sure if the Maple Leafs will see him again next season, for he wants to see changes within the organization.
Auston Matthews still isn't sure if he'll be back with the Maple Leafs next season.

It's similar to the Connor McDavid situation with the Edmonton Oilers in a sense. The gigastar wanted to see meaningful changes within the Oilers' organization before inking a two-year deal worth $25 million in October. Lo and behold, the Oilers... let him down again.
That could be the case with Matthews, who could seek better opportunities with other teams like the Golden Knights. But unlike McDavid, who actually has some playoff success with a Conn Smythe trophy, Matthews hasn't had the same luck. In 68 career postseason games, the gold medalist has only 59 points (26 goals and 33 assists).
While impossible, Kelly McCrimmon can anger Toronto Maple Leafs fans even more by grabbing Auston Matthews
Hockey fans globally are watching Mitch Marner blossom into the postseason superstar he was always destined to be. Nine points (three goals and six assists) have turned heads and have people believing that Mark Stone was right all along. So, why not say the same thing for Matthews and get him a change of scenery?
The Golden Knights have proven that a top-heavy system doesn't always work. Instead, they've relied on a dosage of scoring balance, with players like Brett Howden (five goals this postseason) stepping up thanks to Marner. It would be a proverbial slap in the face for a floundering organization like Toronto, which just saw some turnover.
While this would be hilarious to see the collective heads in Toronto explode, Vegas has other priorities. That includes pending free agents in Rasmus Andersson (unrestricted) and Pavel Dorofeyev (restricted), players who play integral roles on the Golden Knights.
Would it be worth it to be as bloated and top-heavy as the Maple Leafs when you have other talent to worry about? Probably not. McCrimmon has always focused on depth as the team's focal point. After all, that's how they won the Stanley Cup in 2023. Therefore, don't buy too much stock into the move unless you want a complete roster overhaul.
Still, it would be hilarious to see Matthews come to Las Vegas and have a similar success story to Marner. It would prove that the system in Toronto is rotting like a deceased corpse and show McCrimmon's winning style as a general manager.
Imagine Matthews pulling the pants down of his former employer and showing the "Emperor's New Clothes." Okay, they wouldn't be new. But the gold medalist thriving in Las Vegas would show that it wasn't his fault. That would be a great feeling, similar to what Marner is feeling right now.
