Sunday thoughts about... football

This season has seen a personal account of my growing love for hockey... and a dying passion for the NFL.

Ladies and gentlemen, I have some terrible news: Patrick Mahomes is going to another Super Bowl, beating Josh Allen and the Buffalo Bills by a score of 32-29.

Prepare yourselves for Taylor Swift, the refs making bad calls that favor the Chiefs (some people will say Clark Hunt is paying them lavishly), and Roger Goodell allegedly trying to make Mahomes the Roman Reigns of the NFL. The only difference is Reigns is a likable badass who can knock you out with a "spear."

Sure, Chiefs and Eagles fans will be pleased with the outcome of Sunday's championship rounds. But for people in Las Vegas, the Vegas Golden Knights are playing the Florida Panthers at T-Mobile Arena on Sunday. That takes precedence over everything else, including two unlikable football teams in the Super Bowl. I've become one of those people looking forward to the next Golden Knights game instead of the NFL.

Thank goodness for the Vegas Golden Knights

It's good that the Golden Knights are playing excellent hockey because it's tuning out the growing noise from the NFL's marketing machine. An overrated pop star about to grace the presence of billions of television screens on February 9? Who cares! The Golden Knights are in first place in the Pacific Division with 64 points and are rolling in 2024-25.

They're in a dogfight with the Edmonton Oilers now and are vying for the league's top spot. No gimmicks, no predictable penalty calls, and no "Big Brother" marketing like it came from the movie, They Live. Just the Golden Knights playing incredible hockey and being led by Jack Eichel.

But there's a broader point about American football that's being missed. It's become... just unwatchable. In fact, my attention has turned away from the NFL and more towards the NHL. There are plenty of reasons why that's the case, ranging from the referees to a certain quarterback adored by the top sports media outlets.
