The Vegas Golden Knights are the most recent Western Conference champions. However, they're watching the conference finals from home, where the Edmonton Oilers and Dallas Stars are locked in a battle. Both teams want to move on and compete for a chance at winning the Stanley Cup. Of course, the reward for winning the semifinal series is the Clarence Campbell trophy, named in honor of the Canadian executive. Campbell was instrumental in the first wave of expansion for the NHL, with teams such as the Los Angeles Kings and Pittsburgh Penguins entering the fray.

The former president of the NHL was also important in delivering equal punishment for their superstars, setting a precedent in the league. Take Maurice "Rocket" Richard being suspended for the rest of the 1955 season as an example. The Montreal Canadiens legend got into a stick-swinging swordfight with Boston's Hal Laycoe, which resulted in a bench-clearing brawl. In turn, Richard punched linesman Cliff Thompson, which led to him being suspended for the rest of the season.

With the Western Conference Finals in full swing, let's look deeper into the trophy's history. Big rules are associated with the trophy, such as not touching it. Otherwise, that's bad news. But that's not what's being investigated. There are questions stemming from who's won it the most times. So who's won the prestigious trophy the most? How many times did the Vegas Golden Knights win the Clarence Campbell trophy?

The Chicago Blackhawks and Edmonton Oilers are tied for the most Clarence Campbell trophy wins

The Chicago Blackhawks and Edmonton Oilers are tied at the top for the most Clarence Campbell trophy wins with seven. The Blackhawks got most of their victories during the 1970s (three) and the 2010s (three), with a win in 1991-92. Meanwhile, the Oilers got six trophies during the 1980s, with an additional clinched title in 2006-07.

Two other teams have six victories: The Detroit Red Wings and the Philadelphia Flyers. The Red Wings dominated during the 1990s and 2000s, which accounted for all their Western Conference titles. The Flyers were the early birds in the Campbell Conference, with all six conference wins coming in the 1960s and 1970s.

What about the Vegas Golden Knights?

So where does that leave the Vegas Golden Knights? They've won the Western Conference twice, with a victory in their inaugural season (2017-18) and last season (2022-23). With the team in a contention window for the next few years, there could be more wins.

In the meantime, the Edmonton Oilers can take the lead outright with an eighth trophy victory. It would leave the Vegas Golden Knights with a higher climb to the top. However, there's some grace given to teams that started within a span of a decade and that's awarded to Vegas.

Still, they can reload at the NHL Draft and free agency and lay claim to owning the Western Conference next season. After all, they faced off against an incredible Dallas Stars team in the first round this year. With the new pieces getting some time to gel, they can take back the Clarence Campbell trophy and compete for another Stanley Cup.
