Ladies and gentlemen, it's that time again. Vegas Golden Knights superstar Mitch Marner will face off against his former team, the Toronto Maple Leafs, on Thursday. You will hear the headlines revolve around the winger like it's reality television, aka the plague of American society.

Marner has a goal and an assist, heading into Thursday's gargantuan game. Those numbers aren't jumping out to the masses and leave him open to criticism. However, the former "Core Four" member can have the ultimate revenge game against his former club.

That sound you hear is coming from the Maple Leafs fans who were hating on Marner for leaving in the first place. You heard the various remarks, including how "he couldn't handle one of the largest hockey markets around" and how he "wilted under the pressure."

Yet, he made the Stanley Cup Final in his first go-round with the Golden Knights. Not only that, but he was the leading points-scorer in the Stanley Cup playoffs last postseason (29). How can Marner anger the haters even more on Thursday?

How does Mitch Marner explode for against the Toronto Maple Leafs

Let's look at Tuesday's game against the Seattle Kraken for the perfect blueprint for Marner. One particular goal from that game stood out for Vegas: Mark Stone's shorthanded goal with an Eichel assist. Watch at 3:42 in the video to see how it gets set up.

Granted, there was a broken stick on the play. But Stone and Eichel jumped on a massive opportunity that started from a blocked shot. Seattle also front-loaded its power play to attack the net, leaving a prime opportunity for the Golden Knights to score shorthanded.

If Marner can get going on the shorthanded opportunities, that bodes well for a breakout game. He did this during the Stanley Cup playoffs last season by scoring four assists in shorthanded situations. Of course, this isn't the only way that he'll make his cheddar against his former team.

Marner must also lean heavily on his linemates for offensive magic

The reviews are in amongst the Golden Knights masses and they're generally positive about the Marner-Karlson-Howden line. Yes, this stems from the defensive front, where you have a combination of space taken away to go with speed. But the line also has plenty of goal-scoring acumen.

Karlsson scored 30 goals in 2023-24, while Howden had 23 in 2024-25. That's plenty of firepower for the winger to lean into, which can add to the breakout potential. That's especially true since the Maple Leafs have a team save percentage of .895 (20th in the NHL).

Finally, the Golden Knights would like someone to step up on the power play. Victor Olofsson looks like he could be out for a while, leaving a massive void on the shooting front. There's no better calling for anyone than Marner for a breakout game on the power play.

The storylines will be ripe for the picking on Thursday. Fans will talk about the bitter breakup like it was from a Taylor Swift album. But for Marner, it's the ultimate opportunity for him to break out. You can say that the stars... aligned.
