The Vegas Golden Knights traded Keegan Kolesar to the Detroit Red Wings in July. The move was supposed to clear up cap space to the tune of $2.5 million, making room for bigger deals. But the former Golden Knight did have something to say about his new home.
Earlier in July, Kolesar spoke to the NHL media about what he hopes to bring to his new club, the Detroit Red Wings. He felt that he's the missing piece for Detroit, which was desperately looking for some front-end grit and toughness.
"Just talking to guys now, they felt that there was a missing piece, maybe an identity of just having that -- not the fighting aspect, but more of the toughness and being hard to play against, being a veteran presence on the front end, bringing guys into the fight. I think that’s something I can provide."Keegan Kolesar
Of course, he also had some kind words about the Golden Knights' organization. Kolesar talked about the numerous friends he made while staying in Las Vegas.
"You play your entire career in one spot, it's very rare. It'll take some time to get over it because I've made so many great relationships in [Las Vegas]. It'll take some time to turn the page, but that's just the human side of it."Keegan Kolesar
The Golden Knights will certainly miss Kolesar's 1,418 hits and his fourth-line grit. He was the type of teammate to stick up for his friends, going at it with several adversaries. However, it was for a better cause as Kelly McCrimmon looks to restructure his salary cap for better players.
Still, it's nice to see that Kolesar was appreciative of his former organization. He didn't dunk on the group and showed his support for his time in Las Vegas. That's great for an organization that gets a bad rep for how it treats its players.
Here's hoping that Kolesar has a fruitful career in Detroit. Perhaps he can sell Dylan Larkin on coming to Las Vegas and act as a double agent. One can dream, right?
