Grading the Golden Knights rookies in the first game of the Rookie Faceoff

I know the Vegas Golden Knights lost today, dear reader. They were shut out by the Utah Mammoth on the first day of the 2026 Rookie Faceoff, 3-0. But let's take a few deep breaths before going into complete psychosis. After all, it's not even preseason yet.

Breathe in.

Breathe out.

I know that losses are extremely painful to deal with. But it's a small part of life, even if we don't want to admit it. Even Bill Gates went through a divorce in his lifetime, which can be considered a loss (or a win, depending on your paradigm). Anyways, losses are a part of life, so let's get used to it.

So, let's focus on the rookies for this iteration. After all, Mark Stone got plenty of praise for getting a contract extension. Why not show the rookies some love (or criticism, in this case)?

What I liked about the Vegas Golden Knights rookies in the first game

First, props to the team for sticking up for Trevor Connelly after taking a brutal hit along the boards. That's what watching out for your teammates is all about. You don't want to have your teammates in a crumpled heap after being dealt a potential concussion.

Also, the team did an excellent job defensively after the first period. They allowed no goals and kept the pressure on the Mammoth, even generating power play opportunities. Mind you, this is a Mammoth team that features a loaded prospect system, making this a bigger win.

The defensive structure showed promise and kept Utah away from generating any further offense, protecting the goaltender. That will be of utmost importance during the regular season for the minor league teams. That's especially true if they wish to make their respective postseasons.

What I didn't like about the Vegas Golden Knights in the first game of the Rookie Faceoff

First, the special teams was awful and I mean AWFUL. The Mammoth jumped on a long power play to establish an early lead. But it was also Vegas's power play that didn't do much, not getting much along the lines of opportunities. If you're passing the puck too much, what are you even doing?

In fact, offense was the problem for the Golden Knights here. Again, Utah has a promising farm system that features countless prodigies like Daniil But. But (haha double but there) Vegas couldn't get any solid scoring opportunities going after the first four minutes of the first period. The rush eventually died off, leaving the Golden Knights with little bite.

The Golden Knights simply looked overmatched on Saturday against the Utah Mammoth. Utah took advantage of costly Vegas mistakes and forced the Golden Knights to play their game. In turn, that left Vegas's youngsters frustrated and unable to give a response.

The good news? This isn't the end of the world. In fact, it's merely testing the waters of high-profile hockey. Think of it as getting a lil' taste of the hockey world before getting the main entree. Now envision that entree at Guy Fieri's restaurant on the Las Vegas Strip. Ah, good times.
