As I'm watching Miracle, I'm looking at Kurt Russell (almost said Kurt Douglas there) as Herb Brooks. The movie was about the iconic upset that the United States pulled over the Soviet Union, spectacularly collapsing a dominant empire. I bet the ladies saw that before defeating Canada.
The speech before that game was riveting. It was meant to stir up an American team consisting of underdogs that had nothing to lose. Everyone was lauding the Soviets like they were the greatest thing since sliced bread. So, why not us?
Why not the Americans? They were playing with house money and acted as such, pulling off one of the greatest upsets in Olympic history. In turn, it galvanized a nation that was going up against a deadly superpower, invoking a sense of American pride in the wake of uncertainty.
You could hear the "USA" chants in the background. The fans were pulling for the United States to pull off the unthinkable and they did. Suddenly, those Soviets didn't look so scary. They looked... human.
That's the same set of circumstances that the Americans are facing on Sunday morning. Canada has a boatload of superstars in its arsenal, whether it's Connor McDavid, Mark Stone, or Mitch Marner. With that, let's replay that iconic speech for Jack Eichel and the Americans to hear.
Go get 'em, boys. It's your time to shine for old glory. Great moments are born from great opportunity.
