Revenge is a dish best served cold, or so they say.
Logan Thompson can certainly attest to this as the Washington Capitals dominated the Vegas Golden Knights, 5-2. The goaltender had a solid game for his new team, stopping 40 of 42 shots. However, he wasn't the only boogeyman the Golden Knights faced on Sunday.
Remember when Alex Ovechkin won the 2018 Stanley Cup for his team? He did it against the Golden Knights, celebrating with all the beer-chugging from the Cup afterward. It seems he reminded everyone of that fateful series, scoring a hat trick. The result? Their first regular season win against the Golden Knights at the Fortress.
The Capitals improved to 12-4-1, bumping their point total up to 25. Meanwhile, the Golden Knights suffered their second home loss, with their record dropping to 11-5-2. While Ovechkin was the main goal-scorer (13 goals this season) for Washington, Jakob Chychrun (fifth) and Jakub Vrana scored (fourth). Brett Howden (seventh) and Keegan Kolesar (fifth) scored goals for the Golden Knights.
The Capitals swept the season series against the Golden Knights, the first time the franchise has done this in the regular season. Meanwhile, the Golden Knights drop to 9-5-0 lifetime against their old Stanley Cup Final adversary.
The Vegas Golden Knights were overwhelmed on Sunday
Simply put, the Washington Capitals had key players step up on Sunday. Despite the Vegas Golden Knights getting endless scoring opportunities, Logan Thompson performed well. He made the saves he needed to make, becoming a force at the top of the crease.
Of course, there's also the Alex Ovechkin factor. With his hat trick on Sunday, he's 29 goals away from breaking Wayne Gretzky's all-time goals record. His goals consisted of one on the power play, one on even strength in an odd-man rush, and an empty-netter.
This was a game the Golden Knights could've gotten a point from with some luck. They attacked the net early and often, generating countless scoring chances. However, it was the returning Thompson who dominated the game. In turn, it prevented the game from becoming an all-out goalfest, specifically during the third period.
It doesn't help matters when you can't take care of the puck, either. The Golden Knights had 29 giveaways throughout the night, compared to the Capitals only having 13. When you're reckless on offense, giveaways will become a plague onto your franchise. That's especially true with Ovechkin as your opponent, where he'll beat you in transition.
The Golden Knights are starting a five-game road trip on Wednesday, heading to Toronto to face the Maple Leafs. It's another Eastern Time Zone affair, where they were unsuccessful the last time. Will the Golden Knights see their fortunes change this time around? Fans hope that'll be the case, for they want more than one point.
