Ladies and gentlemen, I have some terrific news. The NHL announced that its 2026-27 schedule would be released on July 16, essentially more than a week away. That means we're getting travel guides set up (albeit one gigantic set of guides this year in New York) and planning trips accordingly.
That's right, folks. Soon, hockey season will be here before you know it, as time comes crashing through our system faster and faster by the minute. I know it's hard to believe, but that's the way our modern lives are going.
Speaking of Opening Knight, are you ready for the Gold Carpet event that accompanies it? Golden Knights fans certainly are, which makes this even more exciting. It's nice to get out to T-Mobile Arena and hobnob with the best that Las Vegas has to offer.
So, let's look at four potentially good opponents for the Golden Knights here. Who make the most sense to kick off the festivities? There are plenty of story lines abound here, ranging from divisional rivals to newsbits across the league.
1.) San Jose Sharks
Are you ready for #hockeytwt teenagers in San Jose that are absolutely hungry for some Macklin Celebrini and Will Smith like they were on a hunger strike? Do you want to see a Pleasanton bellhop make awful takes before his team makes another goaltending blunder? Look no further than the Sharks, who will be the perfect Opening Knight opponents for Vegas!
2.) Edmonton Oilers
Connor McDavid.
Leon Draisaitl.
Those two names alone are enough to spark interest in a potential Opening Knight matchup. Considering that the Oilers and the Golden Knights have had a growing rivalry in recent years, it makes perfect sense to put this game on national television for a ratings boost.
3.) Carolina Hurricanes
Stanley Cup Final rematch, anyone? Such matchups make for terrific viewing, regardless of what sport you're watching. The NFL is doing this with the New England Patriots and the Seattle Seahawks this upcoming season, so it makes perfect sense for the NHL to follow suit here.
4.) New York Rangers
With Pavel Dorofeyev traded to the New York Rangers, it makes for interesting drama on this end. How will the Russian winger play against his former team? Moreover, it's an Original Six team that always draws well in any capacity. Imagine how big a deal this would be in the Realm.
