Hockey again hit the headlines for all the wrong reasons this week and the main culprit was once a member of the Vegas Golden Knights.
While a bevy of NHL stars and teams are doing their best to help lift the mood and do their bit during the current COVID-19 pandemic, unfortunately a former Vegas Golden Knights player stole the limelight for all the wrong reasons.
It was revealed on Wednesday that a Instagram Group Chat had leaked, including messages from one-time Knights forward and now Washington Capitals player Brendan Leipsic.
The contents were both disturbing and alarming.
More from Vegas Hockey Knight
- The moment the Vegas Golden Knights have been waiting for
- 3 Golden Knights players deserving of the Conn Smythe Trophy
- If Golden Knights win Stanley Cup, who should Mark Stone pass it to first?
- Why are Vegas Golden Knights fans obsessed with flamingos?
- Just one more game for Golden Knight supremacy
Leipsic and the others involved in the group are obviously not very nice or bright individuals, a fact backed up by the contents of the messages leaked.
From boasting about their love of cocaine to slamming teammates both present and former, the most disgusting messages involved Leipsic and his not-so motley crew of idiotic friends discussing a plethora of women in the most obscene and horrific way.
We won’t give any of the messages any spotlight but every single one was revolting, repulsive and sickening, and there’s no place in life for comments or people like that.
Sadly, Leipsic’s actions and those of his friends, including Florida Panthers player Jack Rodewald, play into the toxic culture that many people believe exists in the NHL.
Leipsic also plays into the disgusting ‘lad culture’ of today but, let me tell you something for free, boasting about using drugs and hurling abuse at women isn’t big, it isn’t funny and it isn’t clever.
It is utterly abhorrent and there is no place for it.
Women deserve to be respected and it has been immensely heartwarming to see the response from so many amazing women on social media in the wake of Leipsic’s repugnant actions.
Thankfully, the Washington Capitals announced today that they have placed Leipsic on unconditional waivers for the purposes of terminating his contract.
The Capitals have done the right thing and, hopefully, Leipsic, who recorded 13 points in 44 games for the Golden Knights in 2017-18, is banished from hockey forever.
Women deserve to be respected, honored and celebrated and the disgusting actions of Leipsic and the others involved should never, ever be tolerated.
It is about time we eradicated that kind of disgusting culture and attitude for good, and hopefully forcing Leipsic out into the hockey wilderness will be the start of that.
His laughable apology just epitomized the type of person he clearly is, and hockey and society in general doesn’t need characters like that.
The Golden Knights dodged a huge bullet cutting ties with Leipsic when they did.
