We can finally avert our attention away from the bombshell events of the last couple of days and back to the ice with the Vegas Golden Knights in action at the Ottawa Senators.

Just a day removed from relieving Head Coach Gerard Gallant of his duties and replacing him with Peter DeBoer, the Vegas Golden Knights will now attempt to snap a four-game losing streak.

It won’t be easy against a plucky Senators team (16-22-8) who are rebuilding, but they have enough young talent to give as good as they’ve got

Today will be all about the Golden Knights and the start of the Peter DeBoer era, however, and it will be interesting to see the response from the players out on the ice.

More from Vegas Hockey Knight

In what is an ultra-competitive Pacific Division, the Knights and DeBoer have 33 regular season games remaining to unlock the potential of this team and start to resemble a Stanley Cup contender.

That must start today and it is now crunch time for the Vegas Golden Knights and the front office, who took an almighty gamble by replacing Gerard Gallant with Peter DeBoer.

They won’t have it all their own way against the Ottawa Senators, though, who are 11-7-4 on home ice this year while the Golden Knights are 10-9-3 on the road.

Anthony Duclair has been an absolute revelation this year and the forward leads the team in points with 32 (21 goals, 11 assists), while franchise defenseman Thomas Chabot leads the Sens in assists with 22.

Ottawa is mired in a bit of a slump right now and they are on an eight-game winless streak (0-4-4), while they have just one win in their last 10 outings.

The Senators are ranked 23rd in Goals For Per Game (2.67), 28th in Goals Against Per Game (3.35), while they are also average to poor on special teams too.

They currently have the worst power play in the entire NHL, operating at just a 11.3 clip, while they have the 15th ranked penalty kill (80.7).

Craig Anderson will start in net for the Senators and the veteran is 6-11-1 this year with a 3.27 Goals Against Average and .897 Save Percentage.

For the Vegas Golden Knights, there won’t be too many drastic changes from Peter DeBoer in his first game behind the bench for this franchise.

Marc-Andre Fleury is expected to get the start in goal while the lines are set to remain unchanged for today’s contest.

And it will be an emotional night for Mark Stone who returns to Ottawa for the very first time since being acquired in a blockbuster trade by the Golden Knights at last year’s Trade Deadline.

Stone spent seven seasons with the Senators, amassing 311 points (123 goals, 188 assists) in 366 regular season games, in addition to going on a deep cup run in 2016-17.

Finishing Off

This is the start of a brave new era for the Vegas Golden Knights, and it will be fascinating to see how this team responds to having a fresh face behind the bench in Peter DeBoer.

We won’t see any drastic changes today in terms of systems, but we should hopefully see a galvanized team that is ready to fight for their goals down the stretch.
