The continuing soap opera that is the nameless Las Vegas Hockey franchise may soon to be coming to an end. The Desert Knights is looking like the leader in the great name game. I hope we are getting to the true end game here, because I am getting a headache.

If you remember, last week I talked about SportsLogos.net information that three names had been trademarked by Bill Foley’s Las Vegas Hockey franchise. Foley’s team had claimed the rights to use the names Red Hawks, Nighthawks and Desert Hawks, including registering a number of domain names associated with those names. Now another round of trademarks have been revealed, but Desert Knights seems to have the easiest road to approval.

More from Vegas Hockey Knight

Besides Desert Knights, the new trademarked nicknames are the Silver Knights and Golden Knights.

Desert Knights by any other name

Even when the earlier names came out, reports circulated that the Red Hawks and Desert Hawks were out of consideration. The Nighthawks and three unspecified others made the cut and constituted a “final four” that Foley and the NHL were considering for the franchise name. The Secrecy reigned while the other three got trademarked and processed.

Evidently the Silver Knights, Golden Knights and Desert Knights were the other three getting trademarked. Of these three, Las Vegas Hockey only has ownership of domain names of the Desert Knights and Nighthawks. Meaning it looks like it will be down to the Nighthawks or the Desert Knights.

And I shudder to think what would happen if we have a crusader-type knight as a mascot in today’s political climate. It would be like all the people trying to stick racist tags on UNLVs “Reb” mascot.

For me, I much prefer Nighthawks. But I don’t think Foley is asking me. He has a not-so-small army of lawyers and marketers and NFL staff. They are all advising what the future name of Las Vegas Hockey will be. Sometime in the coming weeks, we might even know what it will be.
