Those are the career statistics for Marc-Andre Fleury during his four-year Vegas residency. Imagine what would've happened if the Vegas Golden Knights had held onto him. Sure, that would've come at the cost of the 2023 Stanley Cup. But Fleury would've created some gaudy numbers with the Golden Knights, right?
Still, thank goodness that the Golden Knights have that 2023 Stanley Cup because it took a bold move to move off the beloved goaltender. Some fans haven't forgotten about the legend's misplay in the 2021 semifinal. They also remember how he was outplayed by Carey Price in that series, leaving some fans wanting him gone.
But one can't deny the colossal impact that the netminder has had on the franchise. He created numerous career records that seem unattainable, making him the Golden Knights' "gold standard" (waka waka) for goaltending.
That leads us to the big question: Is there a single goaltender that can take down these records right now? Who could come in and take the reins towards breaking said records? I'm sorry for what I'm about to do to you, Mr. Fleury. But it needs to be done.
Could Carter Hart or Adin Hill realistically break any of Marc-Andre Fleury's aforementioned Golden Knights records?
Surprisingly, Adin Hill is the closest goaltender who has a shot. He could hone in on the saves record (Hill has 3,232) and could have a chance at catching Fleury's wins record (Fleury has 117; Hill has 77). However, it's not too realistic since his recent track record has been abysmal due to injuries and poor play.
The record that he has the best chance of catching is for the most games played. Fleury has played in 192 games as a Golden Knight, while Hill has played 139. As for Hart? He'll need some help and a stellar 2026-27 season to even consider bringing him back.
That also means that he must stay healthy on the ice. The Golden Knights have had injury issues in recent years, specifically at goaltender. One can look at the aforementioned 2023 Stanley Cup run and see goaltenders like Hill, Laurent Brossoit, and Logan Thompson all go down.
Who could come in and take Marc-Andre Fleury's Golden Knights records?
Let's make one thing clear: It'll be tough to break certain records that Fleury holds. Some examples include his shutouts record (23), his GAA record (2.41), and his save percentage record (.917). But that doesn't mean that it can't be done.
The Golden Knights have a couple of routes to go here. One, they can use in-house options, Ã la Carl Lindbom or Cameron Whitehead, to give them prolonged sustainability. These goaltenders are young and have tremendous upside. Of course, there's McCrimmon's favorite route, the trade route. We're talking about possibly acquiring Connor Hellebuyck and keeping him around for a while.
Regardless, Fleury's records appear intact for now. In fact, you can say that his numerous records will have staying power for a long time. Still, it takes one stellar season after another to chip away at his marks. Before you know it, he'll lose one or two, along with his iron grip.
