The Vegas Golden Knights have a notable reputation for winning. You can probably rattle off the numerous accomplishments that the franchise achieved during the team's short history. In turn, it's led a bunch of fans to believe that there's only one thing that Golden Knights fans say in life.
"I love it when I win." That should be the Golden Knights' motto for the past nine years. That could rile up the feathers of the 31 other teams.
But there's been one particular area where the Golden Knights have struggled. While they haven't made too many appearances in such games, they haven't won a single outdoor game. The two appearances they made resulted in losses, marking a black eye in the franchise's otherwise-illustrious history.
Yes, I know that it's funny to post a funny clip of a man dryly proclaiming his desire for victory. But outdoor games have been the proverbial boogeyman, especially with one particular outing.
You'll know it when you see it, especially with Joey Daccord getting a shutout. But let's look at the two games that the Golden Knights lost. Mind you, Vegas also has a Stadium Series game at Jerryworld this season. Maybe they can get an "outdoor game" in Arlington, Texas?
February 20, 2021: Lake Tahoe vs. the Colorado Avalanche
Believe it or not, the height of the COVID-19 era produced two outdoor games. The first one consisted of the Golden Knights and the Colorado Avalanche, while the other featured the Philadelphia Flyers and the Boston Bruins. Obviously, the focus will be on Vegas since, well, who else are we supposed to talk about here?
But the game itself was a sloppy penalty fest for the Golden Knights. Vegas had five penalties during the game, with the first four coming from the Golden Knights. Simple errors such as having too many men on the ice and a delay of game penalty from William Carrier led to the Avalanche winning, 3-2.
Alex Tuch and Alec Martinez scored for the Golden Knights, while Sam Girard, Nathan MacKinnon, and Devon Toews added goals for the Avalanche. Ironically, this wasn't the worst of the two outdoor games in Golden Knights history.
January 1, 2024: Winter Classic against the Seattle Kraken
Remember when I talked about Joey Daccord's shutout against the Golden Knights? Well, that came here. The Kraken scored in every period as they made the Golden Knights look like the Seattle Mariners, 3-0.
Ironically, Vegas was far more disciplined in this game, committing only two penalties throughout the game. Granted, they came in the third period, when the game slipped out of their hands. But the Winter Classic was a rare example of the Kraken getting one up on Vegas.
The ironic part? The Golden Knights outshot Seattle in the game, 35-27. Alas, it wasn't meant to be as Daccord stood on his head throughout the game, giving Seattle two points on the greater expansion story. Guess what? The Dallas Stars have Jake Oettinger, who's much better than the aforementioned Daccord. Uh oh...
