The Vegas Golden Knights can put away the Colorado Avalanche for good on Tuesday night. They can finish the President's Trophy winners away with a resounding win, giving them their third Stanley Cup Final appearance in franchise history.
Mind you, it's only been nine seasons for the Golden Knights in the NHL. But that makes the potential feat even more impressive. Not many expansion teams can say that they've gone on generational runs during their sports debuts.
Still, let's look at the keyword for the Golden Knights here. That would be "sweep," which has ironically eluded them throughout their franchise history. There has been only one time that the Golden Knights have been involved in a sweep.
Luckily, they weren't on the receiving end of such a word. Still, we have to go all the way back to the Original Misfit days for this feat. That's right, it's the first-ever playoff series involving the Golden Knights, where they faced a Pacific Division rival.
The Vegas Golden Knights swept the Los Angeles Kings in the first round of the 2018 Stanley Cup playoffs
Believe it or not, the first (and only) time that the Golden Knights swept a playoff opponent was when they faced their first playoff opponent. That would be none other than the Los Angeles Kings, who were stymied by the brilliance of Marc-Andre Fleury.
Fleury had two shutouts during that series, including a series-clinching shutout in Game 4. Here, he stopped all 31 shots heading his way, paving the way for Brayden McNabb to score the game's only goal. Ironically, all three players involved in that goal (McNabb, Reilly Smith, and William Karlsson) are on the current 2026 Stanley Cup playoff team.
On the flip side, the Golden Knights have never been swept in a playoff series. There have been close calls, such as last season's second round matchup against the Edmonton Oilers. Still, the only sweep involved the Kings being swept with the Hollywood elites under the rug.
Well, there's no better time to make that a second time than on Tuesday. You have a wounded Avalanche team that's desperate for anything to go right for them. Why not put the foot on the throat and make some more history.
