Game 3 was going swimmingly well for the Golden Knights before the third period. Mitch Marner scored the fastest hat trick in Stanley Cup Final history and the team blazed out to a 4-0 lead. Certainly, this would be a blowout win and the team would carry all the momentum, right?
The Hurricanes scored four goals in the third period and Sean McDonagh was found with stuff all over himself. Luckily for Vegas, they won Game 3, or else this series would've been over. But that still brings up a scary point.
Suddenly, the Hurricanes have all the momentum. They win the next two games behind Jordan Staal turning water into wine and Brandon Bussi coming up big in Game 5. As for the Golden Knights? Well, they keep shooting themselves in the foot and are on the brink of elimination.
Therefore, the objective for Game 6 is simple. Aside from following five steps to win (i.e., the basics), you don't want to get caught up in your feelings. The Golden Knights have done this over and over again during the Stanley Cup Final and it's cost them games.
Just take Game 2 as a perfect example. You have a 2-0 lead heading into the third period, only for an unsuccessful challenge and quick strikes from Carolina to swing the momentum in its favor. Imagine how different the conversation would've been if John Tortorella and the Golden Knights got out of their own way.
In fact, that should be an additional objective for Vegas. Don't overthink things and everything should be fine. That goes for taking care of the puck and ensuring that the blue line plays better defense. All of this will equal a winner-take-all Game 7 that will certainly draw big ratings.
