Sunday thoughts about... school

It's almost time to go back to school. Of course, the Vegas Golden Knights have given back to the Las Vegas community through the Back-To-School Drive. But there's more to it.

I remember going to DeKeyser Elementary School in Sterling Heights, Michigan, as a kid. We would spend our time making countless jokes about the Colorado Avalanche (you know, because the Detroit Red Wings ruled the roost back then) and playing Pokémon. Of course, we always had that one kid that loved the Avalanche because he liked Joe Sakic.

Ugh... You always have to have one black sheep in the mix. It's like some kid rooting for the Edmonton Oilers in the swath of Vegas Golden Knights fans. There are some things you just don't do!

But that goes back to a broader point. The school year is set to start on Monday, August 11, in Clark County. Now, I'd go on a grandpa-like rant and tell you "BaCk In My DaY, wE sTaRtEd ScHoOl In SePtEmBeR" and all that jazz. However, you don't want your children to roast like Costco chickens out in the heat in June.

Let's steer it back to the Golden Knights for a second. They've done excellent work within the community, specifically with the Back-To-School Supply Drive. The charity event aims to provide children with the necessary school supplies, getting them ready for the upcoming school year.

Think about how cool that is. The local professional hockey team helps the community get ready for the school year when the cost of everything continues to rise. It's part of the charitable nature that Bill Foley displays at every juncture, whether it's helping children get ready to ace their tests or hosting open houses for the community.

That's part of what makes being a Golden Knights fan excellent. You root for a world-class organization that goes above and beyond to help its people. It's something every team should strive to do, especially when it's mixed with on-ice excellence.

It could always be worse. You could be starving for a Stanley Cup in the north.
