While I was in New York, I noticed something a little... off about my shoes. Rather, it was my feet since my socks were also damp. It wasn't the dampness that was the problem, mind you. It was the smell.
I couldn't stand the smell and was too embarrassed to talk to anybody. On top of that, my flight back to Las Vegas was cancelled because of the preceding storms in New York. Can you imagine how intolerable the smell must've been if you sat next to me?
So, I did what any sensible person would do. I threw out the old, tattered shoes and replaced them with slip-on sneakers. But I didn't stop there. I also noticed that my blender was broken and needed an upgrade. So I got a new blender for my smoothies.
I also got an additional pair of shoes for going out, ditching my Tommy Hilfiger shoes that were ripped for Goodfellow shoes. Add in some dress pants and you're setting yourself up nicely for the future. After all, you must level up your game for the future.
Speaking of which, you can already tell that the Vegas Golden Knights know a thing or two about this. The numerous trades to bolster the roster run deep, whether it's acquiring Tomas Hertl, Jack Eichel, or Max Pacioretty. While some have worked in the short term (Pacioretty), others were destined for the long term (Eichel).
What makes the Vegas Golden Knights the perfect example of leveling up?
As mentioned, the Golden Knights are always keen on making big moves. It's always trading for (and signing afterwards!) players like Mitch Marner. It's trading for players like Eichel and Pacioretty. If the move doesn't work? Well, you move on from the player and dump him.
Sometimes, that's the case with players like Pacioretty, when they start to wear and tear. You don't want to be saddled with burdensome contracts in the NHL landscape. That's especially true when you recognize that the Pacific Division actually has some formidable teams in the future (see the San Jose Sharks and the Anaheim Ducks).
Sure, some people don't like it at all. But Golden Knights fans have accepted one constant reality throughout the years. That's the fact that it's all about the logo on the front of the jersey rather than the name on the back of it. You might have your favorite players who have grown on you in past seasons. But ask Pavel Dorofeyev how that worked out for him.
Heck, the same goes for Jonathan Marchessault after he wasn't extended. The NHL is a business that operates on getting the best guys now. If you hold onto your smelly shoes for too long, they're going to drag you down.
Why not throw out the worn-down blender to go with the smelly shoes? If my girl was going to complain about the shoes, it's a wake-up call that it's time to level up. You're getting a clean look that'll help you compete for years to come!
