Would Kelly McCrimmon make the deal happen?

Here's the underlying issue with Jake Evans. He might be due $1.7 million, which can even be retained partially by the Canadiens. However, that price is rumored to float around the $5 million mark when he hits free agency next summer. Would Vegas keep the 28-year-old on a longer deal, even with the salary cap going up next season?

That's the big question that Kelly McCrimmon must ask himself in this scenario. That could be arranged if he's interested in doing a short-term rental. However, the proposed deal will be too much for him to handle, specifically if he's leaving during the summer.

Plus, other in-house options should be considered for contract extensions. Adin Hill is making a strong case after a solid December (2.14 GAA, .925 save percentage). Jack Eichel will also need a new contract with his deal expiring in 2026.

With so many mouths to feed, it doesn't make sense to take on the Toronto native unless you're seeking a short-term piece. With McCrimmon locking up key players such as Shea Theodore (seven years, $7.425 million AAV) and Keegan Kolesar (three years, $2.5 million AAV), it seems McCrimmon is turning towards current Golden Knights stars. However, the Golden Knights have one other aspect standing in the way of a potential deal.
