Ladies and gentlemen, the Vegas Golden Knights are back in the Stanley Cup playoffs again. They managed to overcome a sloppy tenure filled with mistakes and a fired head coach, winning the Pacific Division in the process. Talk about your modern-day miracles, eh?

Their first round opponent? It's none other than the gritty Utah Mammoth, who won the first wild card spot with an impressive team. This will be the first playoff appearance (technically) in franchise history, bringing about a new era in Beehive State hockey.

Some people are saying that this will be a tricky matchup for the Golden Knights. Utah's a young, hungry team that wants to prove itself to the NHL world. With countless young stars on the team, it's hard to discount them in the playoffs.

So let's meet the neighbors from the East and see what the team's capable of. Who are some players that Golden Knights fans should watch out for? What is the confidence meter heading into the first round matchup?

The regular season matchup between the Vegas Glden Knights and the Utah Mammoth

The Vegas Golden Knights went 1-2-0 against the Utah Mammoth during the regular season. The lone win came on November 20, 2025, when the Golden Knights demolished the Mammoth, 4-1. Jack Eichel scored two goals and added an assist, powering Vegas to a key win against a playoff opponent.

In the two losses, the Mammoth outscored the Golden Knights, 9-1. Karel Vejmelka stopped all 28 shots on March 19, leading Utah to a 4-0 victory. He's one of the players to watch in this series, specifically if the Mammoth want to capitalize and abuse.

Who should Golden Knights fans watch for during the first round series?

As mentioned, Vejmelka is a player to watch. Utah will heavily rely on its Olympic goaltender to carry it through the series, which might be challenging. The Golden Knights have 259 shots on goal during the John Tortorella era, adding more danger to the offensive attack.

That averages out to 32.4 shots on goal per game, which will be tough to defend. The Golden Knights only had two games where they tallied less than 30 shots on goal during that stretch. Ironically, Vegas won both games, making them dangerous even when they're not hitting 30 shots on goal.

But there's also star offensive players like Clayton Keller and Dylan Guenther. These players can take over a series, similar to how Matt Boldy and Kirill Kaprizov nearly took over the first round matchup last season. Don't forget about Nick Schmaltz, who provides plenty of offense for the Mammoth.

How confident should Golden Knights fans be with the first round matchup?

The Mammoth have more efficient weapons on their team than people realize. The aforementioned offensive stars can cause damage quickly, as proven by the March 19 matchup. Of course, this was when Adin Hill was in net, where fans can agree that he hasn't been effective all season.

However, the good news is that Vegas has the experience advantage over Utah. That doesn't just stem from the players, though. It's also behind the bench, where John Tortorella has a Stanley Cup. Not only that, but he has two Jack Adams titles to his name.

Therefore, fans should rate this as a 6.5 out of 10. The Mammoth aren't a team that Golden Knights fans can't sleep on. However, Vegas has been hot and they're experienced. That should give fans plenty of reason to be excited, especially after a rocky season.
