On Thursday, Nicolas Cage was tabbed to play legendary Las Vegas Raiders coach, John Madden, in a biopic about the coach's life. It looks... interesting, to say the least. Never would anybody imagine that the star of Mandy and National Treasure would turn into a heavyset football coach. Yet here we are, ready to watch Cage portray the iconic NFL contributer. Still, a choice like Ben Affleck, Matt Damon or Mark Wahlberg would've been even more interesting... and unfitting.
This has to be frustrating for Vegas Golden Knights fans to watch, for their own head coach deserves some love. After all, he did win the Stanley Cup for the Golden Knights, making them the first Las Vegas-based pro team in the four major sports leagues to win it all.
"Where's our biopic of Bruce Cassidy? What about his dance moves?"
That's a good question, dear reader. Let's have some fun with this post and see who should play Cassidy in a potential biopic. Fancastings are reserved for DeviantArt aficionados and Facebook fan groups. It comes from the active imaginations of fans everywhere, serving as a nice "what if" scenario for a film. However, it's time to bring this concept to the Golden Knights, casting who should play the Stanley Cup-winning coach in a movie.
Who should play Bruce Cassidy in a Vegas Golden Knights biopic? Matt Damon? Mark Wahlberg?
Let's lay the framework for the perfect casting. Bruce Cassidy spent his time coaching the Boston Bruins from 2016 to 2022. He made the Stanley Cup Final once, only to lose to the St. Louis Blues in seven games. His tenure was cut short by his firing, where he was eventually scooped up by the Vegas Golden Knights. Fans know what happened after, which would make for a good ending.
But let's build off that Boston connection for a second. There are some actors that resemble Cassidy to an extent. That includes Matt Damon and Mark Wahlberg. Both also hail from Massachusetts, with Wahlberg coming from Dorchester and Damon coming from Cambridge. So who's the better option to play the head coach?
Although Damon is closer to Cassidy (5'11") in height (Damon stands at 5'10", Wahlberg stands at 5'8'), Wahlberg looks more like the Golden Knights head coach. He can also play his serious demeanor to the tee, showing a lighter side at the end. It's a perfect casting for Vegas hockey fans, for they're seeing Marky Mark break it down with the Vegas Vivas.
After all, Wahlberg has spent his time in Las Vegas, hoping for a Hollywood 2.0 vision for the city. His newest project could honor the Golden Knights and their head coach, plugging himself as Cassidy. Although he doesn't seem like the type of person to do this, it would still be a fun idea. Much like the movie stars post for Golden Knights legends, this would be an awesome proposal that even Las Vegas Raiders fans would love.
