Whatever happened to Malcolm Subban?
Not many people remember who Malcolm Subban is. He was a former Vegas Golden Knights netminder who backed up Marc-Andre Fleury. Whatever happened to him?
Most Vegas Golden Knights fans know who Marc-Andre Fleury is. They remember the Vezina Trophy he won in 2021 and how he helped the team get to the Stanley Cup Final in their inaugural season. Being an accomplished goaltender will earn you numerous accolades within your respective community. In short, it's good to be the king.
But most people don't remember the backups of said players. Unless they're hockey trivia aficionados, they won't care who was the secondhand netminder for the team. This is the case with Malcolm Subban, who spent three seasons as Fleury's backup.
Also known as P.K. Subban's brother, the Toronto native has spent his career as a journeyman goalie. Aside from the Golden Knights, he's also played for the Boston Bruins, Buffalo Sabres, and Chicago Blackhawks (where he was traded for Robin Lehner). He did have a solid amateur career, with his best season coming in 2012-13 with the OHL's Belleville Bulls (GAA of 2.14 and a save percentage of .934 that year).
But whatever happened to the former Vegas goaltender? Did he head to Russia and start a training montage similar to Rocky Balboa? Perhaps he went to ESPN to join his brother on commentary? Here was his last sighting as an NHL player.
What happened to former Vegas Golden Knights goaltender, Malcolm Subban
The last sighting of Malcolm Subban was in Columbus, where he played one game for the Blue Jackets in 2023-24. That game was on April 7 against the Carolina Hurricanes, where he allowed three goals in a 3-0 defeat. He did stop 32 out of 35 shots, so he did stand out. As for Columbus that day? Not so much.
That same season saw him play four games for the Cleveland Monsters, where he posted an 0-3 record. Here, he had a GAA of 4.56 and a save percentage of .853. He was more promising earlier that year, with the Vegas Golden Knights goaltender posting a GAA of 2.94 and a save percentage of .907 with the Springfield Falcons.
It seems like the former backup of Marc-Andre Fleury is following his brother off the ice for a post-NHL career. After all, his younger brother, Jordan, did get married recently. He isn't remembered much for his contributions to the Golden Knights, aside from a couple of good seasons. However, he did play a role in their Stanley Cup playoffs run in 2017-18 (GAA of 2.68 and a save percentage of .910 in 22 games). That's something hardcore fans will cherish and never forget.
