Okay, so it's not at night. However, here's a new segment called "Wednesday Knight Wisdom," where we look at what's happening around the league, starting with the home team.
The Vegas Golden Knights have gotten a more comfortable lead in the Stanley Cup playoff race, rattling off points in four straight games. While that pales to the 18-game point streak from the Nashville Predators, it comes at the perfect time for the Golden Knights.
Yes, the Golden Knights blew an opportunity to end said streak yesterday. However, they're also separating themselves from the St. Louis Blues, the closest competition they have in the playoff race. In turn, the Golden Knights are a point behind the Los Angeles Kings and four points behind the Edmonton Oilers.
The Edmonton Oilers Get Two Crucial Points Against the Winnipeg Jets
Speaking of Edmonton, the Oilers defeated the Winnipeg Jets in overtime on Tuesday, 4-3. Zach Hyman got the winning goal, sending the Jets to their fourth straight loss. Suddenly, the Jets are falling out of favor in the playoff race, giving Nashville a golden opportunity to eventually pass them.
As for Edmonton? They stave off hopes of the Vegas Golden Knights passing them in the standings. With Hyman scoring 51 goals this season, the Oilers are getting goal-scoring from people not named Connor McDavid or Leon Draisaitl. Could the tide be turning in Alberta in time for the playoffs?
The Red Wings and Capitals Duke It Out for Betting Playoff Standing
Speaking of playoffs, the Detroit Red Wings and Washington Capitals duked it out yesterday for points for the final playoff spot. Both teams got points; it's just Washington got one more, winning the tight game, 4-3, in overtime. The Capitals now stand at 81 points thanks to Dylan Strome's game-winner, while the Red Wings sit at 79 points, leaving themselves a couple of points out of the playoff standings.
Former Vegas Golden Knight, David Perron, did score a power-play goal for the Red Wings, helping Detroit earn a point. The one problem is Washington has a game in hand, which means the Detroit Red Wings must hope for a Capital collapse to make the playoffs.
Has Jonathan Marchessault Received an Extension Yet?
No. The winger notched an assist in Tuesday's overtime loss to Nashville. Marchessault does have 39 goals for the season, which makes the contract extension more lucrative.
The Vegas Golden Knights have a problem, though. Other players can be re-signed, i.e. Chandler Stephenson and Noah Hanifin. But will the Golden Knights let the Conn Smythe winner walk this summer or extend him? Stay tuned.
