How can Zach Whitecloud improve in 2024-25?

Zach Whitecloud wasn't at his best in 2023-24 and it didn't help the Vegas Golden Knights. How can he improve in the upcoming season?

On the surface, it seems Zach Whitecloud had a productive 2023-24 season. He had a career-high in assists (12) and blocked 105 shots, eight more than his previous campaign. Everything looked good for the 27-year-old defenseman, who's part of a strong blue line. He'll likely pair with Nicolas Hague next season, where the duo will rack up blocked shots. Therefore, things should be good on the Whitecloud front, right?

Arnold, I need you.

Honestly, his performance last season has two sides to it. While the Bemidji State University alum did have good statistics and became a better playmaker, there are some problems with his game. For example, his goals above expected were at -0.2, a drop from 1.5 in the previous year. That only amounted to two goals throughout the 2023-24 season, adding minimal bite to the Vegas Golden Knights.

There's more to the story than scoring a pair of goals in 61 games (two goals for #2!). While defensemen aren't expected to do much goal-scoring, only having two last season doesn't do much for the team. Noah Hanifin scored two on the power play in 19 games with the Golden Knights, contributing as much in a shorter timeframe. So what is there for Whitecloud to improve?

The offensive game of Zach Whitecloud must develop further

Going back to only scoring two goals, it's not expected that he'll be a double-digit goal-scorer for the Vegas Golden Knights. After all, last year's goal leader among defensemen was Shea Theodore (five). However, Theodore also has an expanded role as an offensive playmaker, meshing well in any unit. That includes the power play, where he had 13 assists on the man advantage.

For Zach Whitecloud, that means getting more involved offensively. That starts with getting comfortable in the NHL, where he already found his defensive niche. The defenseman has been tough in front of Vegas's net, keeping the puck out by blocking shots. However, he can find his niche offensively, whether it's tagging along on a rush or setting up a play. His 12 assists last season is a good start, allowing him to grow.

Finding his shot

One thing that makes Noah Hanifin a special player is his offensive acumen. He has numerous tools that make him a scoring threat, including a great hockey sense, running the play, and having a good shot. If Zach Whitecloud wants to become a better offensive player, that starts with growing his shot. Of course, as he grows more confident, his shot will also grow.

Last season, 62 shots from Whitecloud were blocked, which doesn't inspire much confidence in a player who scored two goals. As mentioned, finding that niche offensively will make him better. It doesn't matter if it's from the point or even in front of the net. His game will soar if he develops a particular strength on the ice.

The 27-year-old has the makings to become a good player for the Golden Knights. He's big and physical, adding defensive bite to Vegas's game. However, he can improve his standing by developing himself offensively. With that, he'll help them become a Stanley Cup-contending team.
