Why we're not finished with the Toronto Maple Leafs star and these rumors yet
Let's say the Toronto Maple Leafs don't get a deal done with Mitch Marner after this offseason. The salary cap pinch and situation involving Nick Robertson (among others) makes this a tough affair. Even if Tavares leaves, the Maple Leafs are caught in a tough spot in contract negotiations. What will happen with the winger if he doesn't re-sign?
Remember that Theodore and Brayden McNabb are in the last years of their respective deals, too. $8.05 million comes off the books after next season, with names like Kaeden Korczak and Ben Hutton ready to step in. The Vegas Golden Knights have made moves and worried about the aftereffects later, as proven by Ivan Barbashev getting a new contract. This wouldn't be surprising if they wanted to pursue a deal.
Whatever the case, it appears the Marner rumor mill is going out of commission in Las Vegas. Kelly McCrimmon is satisfied with his current group and will tackle the new years with some new faces. Right now, the focus is remaining competitive during the regular season, with any trade speculation taking a back seat. Besides, the Golden Knights are in a similiar position regarding the salary cap, adding more stress to their future plans.
