The Vegas Golden Knights will have a challenging opponent on Tuesday in the Detroit Red Wings. Led by Dylan Larkin (eight goals and 10 assists this season), the Red Wings stand at 9-4-0 and are in a prime position for a playoff spot. Now, that's a phrase Red Wings fans haven't heard in years, given that their last appearance was in 2017.
Yeah, kinda feels like it, doesn't it? No wonder it's been so cold in the D.
But in all seriousness, one man's been responsible for Detroit's sudden uprising: Larkin. The Red Wings megastar sits in fourth place in the NHL in points entering Monday, leading the Red Wings' attack. He's the focal point for Detroit heading into Tuesday's late-night affair, hoping to continue the Red Wings' surging start.
The question remains how the Golden Knights can contain this superstar. What are the tricks of the trade that'll help Vegas overcome the Red Wings and their focal point? Ironically, that means looking at the last game and seeing what worked for Vegas.
The Vegas Golden Knights must take space away from Dylan Larkin and the Detroit Red Wings
Despite Larkin being incredibly successful, the Red Wings' attack hasn't done much. Detroit was tied for 14th in goals scored (3.23) entering Monday, tying with... the San Jose Sharks. No offense to San Jose, but you'd expect Detroit to do better, specifically with Larkin leading the way.
That's why it's imperative to take away as much space as possible. It worked to an extent against the Colorado Avalanche, where their goals came off the rush and breakaways. It eased the pressure off Carl Lindbom and kept Vegas within striking distance. Lo and behold, Nathan MacKinnon gets one assist off the empty net.
Of course, it also helps to eat up as much time of possession as possible. The Sharks did this in the third period and took a point on Sunday. That's especially true on the game-tying goal, where Cam Talbot didn't stand a chance.

Notice how San Jose keeps it away and waits for the right scoring opportunity. That's what the Golden Knights must do while keeping the puck away from Larkin. If Vegas can do this, they will have an easy time against the Red Wings.
The Red Wings have been historically mediocre since the Golden Knights entered the NHL. They haven't gotten anything going and have been as stale as Little Caesar's Crazy Bread (better get extra sauce!). However, this year might be different, thanks to Larkin taking the reins. That's something the Golden Knights can't let happen on Tuesday.
