Seth Jarvis had two goals, and Jackson Blake was credited with the game winner in a 3-2 Carolina win over the Vegas Golden Knights. Pyotr Kotchetkov had 29 saves for the Hurricanes, who stopped a brief two-game losing streak.
Tomas Hertl and Shea Theodore had the two Vegas goals, and Adin Hill had 25 saves in the losing effort. The loss puts the Golden Knights in a tie for the top of the Pacific with Edmonton at 61 points.
The first period was very much night and day for Vegas compared to Tuesday night. They came out of the gates energized, firing the first two shots (something that took till well into the second in Nashville to pull off) and gaining a good handle on the momentum. The Golden Knights ended up outshooting the Hurricanes 13-7. Pyotr Kochetkov in goal for Carolina was pretty much the sole reason it was scoreless going into the second.
Carolina started the second period with their trademark slow and gloopy defensive style. Early on, they were still able to generate some chances, one of which found the back of the net: Tomas Hertl’s 13th goal at 4:22 off a calmly efficient feed from Alex Pietrangelo.
As the period went on, the chances for the Golden Knights started to dry up in a hurry. They ended up with eight shots total in the second, most of those before Keegan Kolesar’s penalty shot miss midway through. Meanwhile, the Hurricanes took that miss and dominated the second half of the period. All led to the tying goal from Seth Jarvis's 14th goal, sweeping up a puck that bounced off two skates and that Hill missed covering by maybe a handful of inches.
Bad luck strikes the Golden Knights in the third period
Into the third period, it looked like the game could turn into a really good back and forth type of affair…for about 54 seconds. Then, after a three-on-two rush from Carolina, an unfortunate deflection off the stick of Noah Hanifin turned a harmless looking dump in from Jackson Blake into a 2-1 lead for Carolina.
5:23 later, a really great looking chance for the Golden Knights was broken up by some good defensive work by Brent Burns. A high-arcing dump in and a two-on-one later, Seth Jarvis zipped it home past a diving Adin Hill to make it 3-1.
Vegas made a little bit of a game of it, courtesy of Shea Theodore on the power play (with an uncredited assist to a well-timed screen by Victor Olofsson). After the goal, Vegas outshot the Hurricanes 6-1 the rest of the way. But Kotchetkov was too good all night, and the hole for the Golden Knights too big to climb out of for the second straight night.
Next on the Marquee:
After a two-and-a-half-hour flight, the Golden Knights will be back in action tomorrow night in United Center against the Chicago Blackhawks at 5 P.M. This should be an easy game for Vegas to try to salvage something from this road trip (at least, on paper). They're in the teeth of a four-game losing streak, losing leads in two of them (one of them a 3-2 shootout loss last night in Nashville). However, the fact that only four people have contributed to the 10 Golden Knights' goals in the last five games is something that leaves a little fragment of worry. Until then…
