Are you ready for more outdoor hockey, dear reader? The NHL Stadium Series is coming up on March 1 between the Detroit Red Wings and Columbus Blue Jackets. The action will take place at Ohio Stadium, home of the defending college football champions, the Ohio State Buckeyes. That's right. You're getting a spiritual version of the "Big Game" in hockey form.
Of course, the Vegas Golden Knights have never been in a Stadium Series game. They've been in a Lake Tahoe game against the Colorado Avalanche on February 20, 2021. They lost that game, 3-2. In fact, they've lost the other outdoor contest they participated in against the Seattle Kraken. That was on January 1, 2024, and was a 3-0 shutout.
Aside from watching Joey Daccord steal the show, the Golden Knights have been outscored, 6-2, in both games. It's uncharacteristic of a successful hockey team. You'd figure they'd have at least one win against somebody in the elements. Oh well. Maybe when they have the Winter Classic at Caesar's Palace, will we see them win one.
Perhaps you're interested in watching the game on March 1, though. Maybe you want a gridiron (okay, it's on ice) battle between two playoff-contending teams. Have no fear, dear reader. Here's a look at all 15 Stadium Series games, spanning coast to coast. It doesn't matter if it's Los Angeles or New York City. This spectacle has been in every part of the country.
A historical breakdown of the Stadium Series
The first game in this decade-long series was actually a Pacific Division battle. It featured the Anaheim Ducks and Los Angeles Dodgers at Dodger Stadium. The game went down on January 25, 2014, and was a 3-0 shutout victory for the Ducks. Corey Perry, Matt Beleskey, and Andrew Cogliano all scored goals for Anaheim in front of 54,099 fans.
This game was part of a four-game set featuring two games in New York City and one in Chicago. The New York Rangers faced the New Jersey Devils and New York Islanders, winning both games by a combined score of 9-4. The last game was a contest between the Pittsburgh Penguins and Chicago Blackhawks. The Blackhawks were the first home team to win in the spectacle by destroying the Penguins, 5-1. Jonathan Toews scored two goals and an assist at Soldier Field, while Patrick Sharp contributed a goal and assist.
But back to the Rangers for a second. They scored the most goals in a single game by wrecking the Devils, 7-3. This was part of that four-game set that went down on January 26, 2014. You can say the score was equivalent to the New York Yankees winning another game. The only difference? Aaron Boone isn't mismanaging his bullpen.
The Columbus Blue Jackets will participate in their first outdoor game in franchise history on March 1. Meanwhile, the Detroit Red Wings have actually won a game here. They defeated the Colorado Avalanche on February 27, 2016, by a score of 5-3. Whatever the case, it'll be an epic battle that reminds some fans of the old Michigan-Ohio State games. Who knows? Maybe the Vegas Golden Knights will get a Stadium Series game of their own. Perhaps if they produce a miracle and keep Sam Boyd Stadium open...
