Kelly McCrimmon gives a key William Karlsson update for the first round matchup vs. Utah

It's basically what fans should come to expect with the Original Misfit. Will fans see him return to the ice again?

William Karlsson of the Vegas Golden Knights has dealt with some unfortunate injuries in the past couple of seasons. He sustained a lower-body injury on November 8 against the Anaheim and hasn't seen the ice since. It's sad because the Original Misfit has four goals and three assists this season, marking a significant downfall from his prior production.

Kelly McCrimmon shed some light on his injury situation by telling fans and media of his status heading into the first round series against the Utah Mammoth. Let's just say that fans shouldn't expect to see him against Utah.

The action for the Golden Knights starts on Sunday at 7 PM PST as Vegas takes the ice for Game 1 against Utah. Unfortunately, that means no Karlsson for the Golden Knights as they make their trek towards another Stanley Cup.

Still, there's an extra incentive to win another round. That's especially true if the Golden Knights face the Edmonton Oilers in the second round again (or the Anaheim Ducks for the first time in playoff history) and if Karlsson returns in the second round. They could use another key two-way player and deploy him to take on the league's best players, namely Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl.

What does William Karlsson's prolonged absence mean for the Vegas Golden Knights against the Utah Mammoth?

Well, you miss out on having a key veteran player for a big first round matchup. That much is clear, especially with 33 goals and 41 assists in 111 career postseason games. Without that scoring, the Golden Knights become more handicapped offensively.

However, there's a deeper meaning to that. Karlsson provides a solid two-way game that fans can't overlook. He's great at sealing the boards off and can also take away space in the middle. It doesn't matter if it's near the bumper or in the neutral zone. The Original Misfit is good at redirecting offensive players away from the sweet spots.

That could've been of some assistance in this round, especially with Utah's balanced attack. Big names like Clayton Keller and Nick Schmaltz loom large for the Mammoth, giving Vegas plenty of problems. Who are you going to rely on to tackle these players and protect the netminder?

Granted, that puts Nic Dowd's role in a bigger spotlight than before. He plays a similar game to Karlsson's, only with a greater emphasis on defensive play. However, you'd love to have that depth piece come in and anchor the lower lines for Vegas.

Alas, the Golden Knights can only make do with what they have. The good news? John Tortorella and company have done an excellent job with this, posting a record of 7-0-1 since he arrived on the scene. It's on the team to capitalize on that and win playoff rounds before he returns to the team.
