Look, I know that getting rid of Bruce Cassidy looked like the wrong move in hindsight. How could you get rid of someone who won the Stanley Cup in their first season with the team? I mean, do you remember this hit piece about the head coach being the wrong fit?
Yeah, me too.
Well, it seems that the Golden Knights' head coach has proven everyone wrong. He's led Vegas to a 15-4-1 stretch in 20 games, getting them a Pacific Division title and a Western Conference Final appearance. But that's not the only thing that has helped the Golden Knights.
Players like Pavel Dorofeyev (NHL-leading nine goals) and Mitch Marner (NHL-leading 18 points) have benefitted from their new head coach. Heck, the Golden Knights goaltending has done well, too. They've averaged a save percentage of .915 during the Stanley Cup playoffs.
The verdict? Most of us were wrong about John Tortorellea, specifically myself. Sometimes, a massive shakeup is needed for a team to succeed. They need a new voice in the locker room, especially when the message starts to wear thin. In turn, that has the Golden Knights four games away from making the Stanley Cup Final. Who would've thought?
Now, could that lead to a long-term deal for the new Golden Knights head coach? It seems likely. After all, the new message has resonated well with the locker room, specifically with the veterans. It could also make the Golden Knights a threat in the new few years, making people forget about Cassidy.
