Not many people thought that Lukas Cormier would have one goal and three assists in his first six games of the 2025-26 season. Yet, here we are. The Henderson Silver Knights defenseman is leading the scoring charge for the AHL club, helping them get to a record of 4-1-1.
That includes a power play goal, making him one of the most surprising figures around. It's no wonder the Silver Knights are tied for second in the Pacific Division, shocking many hockey fans. Cormier's been the most pleasant surprise for a group expecting big names like Trevor Connelly to lead the charge.
Looking at the Golden Knights' roster, there's reason to believe he has an outside shot. Jeremy Lauzon has started off as an unmitigated disaster, only committing penalties instead of scoring. You also must factor in players like Brayden McNabb getting older, leaving another roster spot open.
But let's look at where the defenseman stands within the organization. Does he have a realistic chance of becoming a future Golden Knight after his incredible start? Or will he be serving coffee to Kelly McCrimmon and play in the AHL forever?
How is Cormier doing it with the Henderson Silver Knights?
Cormier's been well-versed in generating offense wherever he goes. He's a shoot-first player who also jumps on the attack when needed. Breakout seasons like 2021-22 (33 goals and 48 assists with the Charlottetown Islanders) are perfect examples.
Fans should expect him to show off his offensive skills, particularly in a playmaking settting. He's terrific at setting up rebounds (i.e. Shea Theodore) and can fire quick passes to his teammates.
If Cormier continues banking on this, he'll have a big season for Henderson. He did that against the San Diego Gulls on October 25 and he also showed it in the past.

That's a shot that could land him a roster spot if he continues developing.
Will Lukas Cormier's fast start lead to a roster spot on the Vegas Golden Knights?
Let's say Cormier continues his stellar season with the Silver Knights. Let's say that he gets 20 goals and roughly 35 assists (in a perfect scenario). Will that equal a future roster spot on the Vegas Golden Knights?
First, it's highly unlikely that Cormier plays atop the first pair. He's too small (5'10" and 190 lbs.) and is vastly limited defensively. At his very best, he could be a 2D pair because he has offensive skills.
It's highly likely that Cormier will be a rotation guy based on said size and skill set. The 23-year-old can only do so much at his peak, which will hurt him more as he ages. It's a similar problem Jonathan Marhcessault faced as he aged, watching his defensive skills deteriorate into nothing.
Still, Cormier's promising start gives him hope for a stellar NHL career. He's already helping the Silver Knights in many respects, whether it's on even strength or the power play. Who knows? His underdog story might translate into the NHL dream if he's lucky.
