A Golden Knights playlist fit for D.C.
DC's got its fair share of musical history, which I've tried my best to capture in this list. Ranging from the city's legendary go-go to rock, hip-hop, and countless others, here's what I feel captures the vibe of the nation's capital:
Bustin' Loose - Chuck Brown
The "godfather of Go-Go" was and is a legend in DC's music scene. Credited with popularizing the musical style that Washington, D.C. is known for, the 1979 hit "Bustin' Loose" is possibly his best-known song. Many in DC will know it specifically as the Washington Nationals' song that plays during and after our iconic home run submarine horn.
Shake, Rattle, and Roll - Joe Turner
This one doesn't necessarily have roots in DC, but get ready to hear it anyway. The 1950s classic has been used as Capitals captain and NHL goals record-holder Alexander Ovechkin's goal song for years, and if we're lucky/unlucky (depending on your point of view), there's a good chance it'll play during Friday's game.
Welcome to DC - Mambo Sauce
Another, more modern taste of go-go-infused hip-hop comes from DC natives Mambo Sauce, named after the city's iconic cousin of BBQ sauce. This one's been used as an anthem for basically every sports team in the DC area at somepoint, and as far as I know, the NBA's Wizards still use it for their intro. Between the lyrics and the music video opening at Washington National Airport, it's a top-tier celebration of the city.
Take On Me - A-ha
Anyone who's ever been to a Nationals game will recognize this one, to the point where it's transcended the city's culture. The 1980s one-hit wonder was originally used as walk-up music for utility man Michael Morse, and has since turned into another sports anthem of the city. Most notably, it's become the Nats' seventh-inning stretch song, once "Take Me Out to the Ballgame" finishes up.
