When the Vegas Golden Knights traded Logan Thompson to the Washington Capitals last summer, Las Vegas was in absolute shock. The lovable goaltender was sent for a couple of third-round draft picks (one in 2024 and one in 2025), establishing Adin Hill as the long-term starter. But that didn't stop Thompson from signing autographs.
After all, he's a man of the people. That's what good-hearted fellows do. They stick around for their peeps and treat them to an endless supply of memories.
But let's stay on the topic of the two teams for a second. The Capitals can give the Golden Knights a hand for next season. Vegas needs winger depth to take them to the next level. That depth (or lack of) was exposed against the Edmonton Oilers, leading to a five-game elimination.
Likewise, the Capitals were also eliminated in five games in the second round. Since they share a similar fate to the Golden Knights, why not share the wealth? After all, it's never too early for Christmas or the holidays.
In fact, why not look at three Capitals free agents that can make the Golden Knights better? These three players are all forwards who can add scoring to the lower lines. After all, balance is the key to life.
1.) T.J. Oshie
He didn't play in the 2024-25 season due to a chronic back injury. He might also be 38 years old and at the end of his career. However, T.J. Oshie has proven himself to be a reliable goal scorer when called upon.
He's experienced as a special teams player, scoring seven power play goals in 2023-24. That's because of a wicked shot that has scored 302 career goals. Oshie competes for every puck in front of him and is willing to get dirty when needed.
Fans saw what happened with Brandon Saad during his 2024-25 season with the Golden Knights. Given that Oshie knows how to finish, that could be a low-risk move that can help Vegas.
2.) Taylor Raddysh
One problem with T.J. Oshie is that he's 5'11 and 38 years old. Maybe a younger, bigger player like Taylor Raddysh (27 years old, 6'3", 198 lbs) will help in this situation?
Last season, Raddysh scored seven goals and 20 assists with the Capitals. He's developed a reputation as a consistent player, scoring whenever needed.
While he's still learning how to use his size at the NHL level, that's something Bruce Cassidy can help with. After all, he knows how to get the most out of his veteran talent. Just look at Tanner Pearson (12 goals and 15 assists) as a shining example.
3.) Andrew Mangiapane
Need a constant threat to score whenever he has the puck? Do you need special teams depth who reads the ice well? Look no further, dear reader.
Andrew Mangiapane is a reliable penalty killer who can be utilized on the lower lines. He's also an aggressive forechecker who would pair well with Keegan Kolesar. If he can play better away from the puck, he would be an ideal signing for Kelly McCrimmon.
