2. Consistency

There is a magic ingredient in sport called consistency and, sadly, the Vegas Golden Knights haven’t been able to add it to their recipe for success so far this year.

It says it all when the longest win streak of the year is five, compared to some of the heavyweights in the NHL like the Boston Bruins and the Washington Capitals, who have both carved out multiple sustainable winning streaks.

There is no exact science when it comes to working out how to be consistent, but a lack of consistency has arguably been the Knights’ biggest bugaboo this year.

Far too often Vegas has taken one step forward only to take another two steps back, and that isn’t conducive to long-term success.

And, it is fair to suggest that it could have cost the Golden Knights a lot more were it not for the fact that they find themselves in a poor Pacific Division.

However, at some point you need to go on a run and at the moment it doesn’t seem that this team has what it takes to crack out six, seven, eight wins in a row.

Plus, if they do make the postseason, you can’t win one night and then lose the next two because, ultimately, that will result in a very long summer.

So, one of the biggest jobs on Peter DeBoer’s to-do list will be to work out how to truly unlock the potential of the group of players he has at his disposal, while getting them to be more consistent down the stretch.

After all, the hallmark of any good to elite team is to grind out a result even if you aren’t at your best, but the Golden Knights currently lurch from one end of the spectrum to the other.

If DeBoer can crack the mystery that is the Vegas Golden Knights’ puzzling lack of consistency, and then solve it, then that will lead to the success this franchise craves.
