The road trip continues for the Vegas Golden Knights tonight with a tough matchup against the Toronto Maple Leafs.

Following their hard-fought 2-1 success over the Columbus Blue Jackets on Tuesday, the Vegas Golden Knights are in Canada tonight for the latest test in this four-game road trip.

It wasn’t a Picasso against the Blue Jackets but the Knights did what they had to in order to get back to winning ways and start this road trip on a positive note.

Vegas’ biggest bugaboo this year has been their inconsistency and their inability to put together a full 60 minutes, flaws that have cost them dearly on occasion through the first 16 games.

However, they dug in and produced a real gutsy effort to get the job done against Columbus, and they will need similar determination tonight.

The level of quality will need to be raised against an elite Toronto Maple Leafs team, though, who are capable of running through any team despite their less than stellar start to the regular season.

The Leafs are 8-5-3 on the year and have hardly set the world alight, although they have missed John Tavares for a period of time due to an upper-body injury.

Tavares was back in the lineup on Tuesday, however, and they boast a plethora of elite stars who can wreak havoc against any team in the NHL.

Of course, as is always the case in Toronto, controversy always seems to follow this franchise around and there seems to be a different headline every single day.

But, given the talent they have at their disposal, the Leafs should be a contender this year and they will be looking to go on a run with Tavares back now.

In Tavares’ absence it has been, and not surprisingly, franchise center Auston Matthews who has been leading the way with 12 goals and six assists for 18 points.

Mitch Marner is just behind him with 17 points (four goals, 13 assists) and that includes seven points on the power play.

Morgan Rielly, who is on the cusp of evolving into a bona fide Norris Trophy defenseman, has recorded 15 points (three goals, 12 assists) and seven players have registered 10 or more points on the year so far.

And then there is the wildcard factor in Ilya Mikheyev who has been enjoying one hell of a rookie season with four goals and seven assists for 11 points.

The Leafs do have some struggles in the goaltending department with Frederik Andersen a notoriously slow starter, and he has a 2.84 Goals Against Average and a .908 Save Percentage through 12 starts, which is still pretty good.

Andersen’s backup, however, has been less than stellar to say the least with Michael Hutchinson putting up a 4.25 GAA and a .885 SV% in four starts. Not ideal.

Playing in their own barn, the Maple Leafs will no doubt be boosted by having Tavares back on the roster and the center should be a lot sharper after getting a game under his belt against the LA Kings on Tuesday.

They won that contest 3-1 and the Toronto Maple Leafs will be looking for their third win on the bounce tonight.

The Leafs are expected to go with Andersen between the pipes tonight and these are their projected lines:

Trevor Moore – John Tavares – Mitch Marner
Andreas Johnsson – Auston Matthews – William Nylander
Ilya Mikheyev – Alexander KerfootKasperi Kapanen

For the Vegas Golden Knights, Malcolm Subban will get the start between the pipes tonight with Marc-Andre Fleury given the night off following a superb effort against the Columbus Blue Jackets on Tuesday.

Defenseman Nick Holden is set to be a scratch because of flu, while veteran blueliner Deryk Engelland could be a healthy scratch for the second straight game.

Rookie defenseman Nic Hague and bottom six forward Nicolas Roy were recalled from the Chicago Wolves earlier today, and both could play in Toronto tonight with Alex Tuch still day-to-day with an upper-body injury.

Like the Maple Leafs, the Golden Knights boast an array of potent weapons in their lineup, including Mark Stone who leads the team in points with 18 (eight goals, 10 assists).

William Karlsson is second on the team in points with four goals and 12 assists for 16 points, with Vegas’ dynamic top line of Jonathan Marchessault, Karlsson and Reilly Smith having combined for 44 points through 16 games.
