Why The Grade

Tomas Hyka carved out a big enough sample size to be able to award him a grade and, given the body of work we’ve got to go on, we decided to give the forward a D grade. We’ll explain the reasons for that grading now.

After showing what he’s capable of in the AHL with the Chicago Wolves, Hyka was given chances to translate that to the NHL and, while he impressed in short bursts, he never really put it all together in the majors on a consistent basis.

He did produce some nice moments and showed Vegas fans why he is known for his sublime passing skills, nearly setting up Erik Haula for a power play goal with a superb dish in the early stages of 2018-19.

However, Hyka paid the heavy price for being called up to the big leagues at a time when the Golden Knights were in the middle of their sophomore slump. The right shot was brought in to spark new life into a struggling offense but he failed to really make the desired impact and, with the combination of Vegas eventually hitting their stride, was sent back down to the AHL.

If we were judging Hyka on his performances in the AHL then his grade would be a lot higher, but these Report Cards are based solely on what you do in the NHL and, as such, we think a D grade for Tomas Hyka is probably fair, who will play his hockey in Russia in 2019-20.
