NHL Draft 2019: Vegas Golden Knights stock up to finish
The Vegas Golden Knights finished off the 2019 NHL Entry Draft by selecting a goaltender, a playmaker and another power forward.
It was a busy day for the Vegas Golden Knights who started the day with eight picks but finished with seven after pulling the trigger on a trade with the San Jose Sharks to move up in the second round.
They ended their involvement at the draft by making three picks at the end of round five, filling a variety of needs.
They drafted goaltender Isaiah Saville with the 135th pick before selecting Finnish forward Marcus Kallionkieli with the No.139 pick.
And, to round things off nicely, the Knights then took power forward Mason Primeau with the 141st overall pick.
Saville is a native of Anchorage, Alaska and he’s committed to playing college hockey at the University of Nebraska-Omaha in 2019-20.
He posted a 1.90 GAA and a .925 SV% in 34 games for Tri-City Storm this year, which are both hugely impressive numbers.
Saville has been praised for his lateral movement from post to post and his ability to use his angles well by coming out of the net and challenging skaters.
Ranked #67 by McKeen’s Hockey, Saville is a high-end prospect and, with goaltenders like gold dust due to their importance, the Vegas Knights have addressed a real need by adding depth to one of the most important positions in all of sports.
Kallionkieli formed one of the most formidable lines in the USHL alongside Martin Pospisil and Bobby Brink, with the latter being taken at the top of the second round by the Philadelphia Flyers today.
Kallionkieli, of Finnish and Brazilian heritage, posted 29 goals and 24 assists for 53 points in 58 games for the Sioux City Musketeers this year.
Finally, Primeau turned out to be the Knights’ final pick of the draft and he’s perhaps their most intriguing selection of the whole weekend.
Only 17-years-old but already a hulking specimen at 6’5″ and 203 lb, Primeau is a power forward who can play a real 200-foot game and excel in the face-off circle.
Primeau comes from a hockey family with his dad Wayne carving out a long career in the NHL, while his uncle, Keith Primeau, also played in the majors for a long stint.
Mason Primeau appears to be built like his uncle and he has the potential to morph into a terrific two-way center for Vegas.
He began this year with the Guelph Storm before going on to tally 10 goals and 16 assists for 26 points in 49 games for North Bay Battalion in the OHL.
All three players, along with Vegas’ other picks, should be in Sin City once Development Camp opens next week.
Vegas should now be done for the night barring any late trades to move into the later rounds of the 2019 NHL Draft, or any trades to try and free up some much-needed cap space.
We will be wrapping up our draft content over the next couple of days so make sure you stick with us for more analysis of all of this weekend’s draft picks!
