Mark Stone continues to have a productive World Championship for Team Canada. Jonathan Marchessault also contributed two assists in the 5-2 team Canada win.
Canada moved to within three points of current group leaders Germany with their win Thursday morning in the International Ice Hockey World Championships. Mark Stone, Las Vegas Golden Knights forward picked up during the trade deadline, scored for the second time in two games. Along with those two goals Mark Stone has an additional assist so far in the tournament.
Jonathan Marchessault starting left-wing for the Golden Knights, was more involved in the win without scoring a goal, with two assists in the contest. Marchessault now has two goals and three assists in the tournament.
Golden Knights defenseman Shea Theodore has five total points in the tournament, one goal and four assists. One of those assists came Thursday against France.
Golden Knights players are representing their club team well in tournament play but Team Canada has something to prove after losing the first game of the tournament to Finland. The have since beaten Great Britain, Slovakia and now France. Not a bad list of countries if the sport were soccer but those countries aren’t consider international hockey powers (Slovakia is just small I’m sure they’d churn out more NHL level players if they were a larger country). Anthony Mantha young forward for the Red Wings has been team Canada’s hot player with two goals against France.
Team Canada’s real test comes on Saturday where they will face unbeaten Germany. After Germany they have contests with Denmark and the United States. The are not out of hot water yet despite nice looking box scores.
It’s a bittersweet feeling for Golden Knights fans to see their players doing well overseas. For one most Golden Knights fans would probably be rooting for Team USA, who trailing Canada by one point and Germany by four. Fans would clearly prefer seeing these players playing the St. Louis Blues in the NHL playoffs rather than their rivals the San Jose Sharks after a gut wrenching game 7 loss against them in the first round of the playoffs.
In the meantime Golden Knights fans can hope Mark Stone, Jonathan Marchessault and Shea Theodore continue to excel in Slovakia at the IIHF World Championships to give us hope for the 2019-20 NHL season. Oh and please no one get any season ending injuries. For reals guys.
Do you have a passing interest in the World Championships? Or do you just want to see the San Jose Sharks lose? Yeah we just want to see the Sharks lose.
